Only Fed-Up Voters Can Fix State's Damaged System for Picking Legislators
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/25/02 | George Skelton

All this -- the closed primary, protectionist redistricting, term limits -- "is a dastardly combination," South continues. "I'm utterly disgusted with the whole thing."

Gray Davis' political thug Garry South and the Los Angeles Times' liberal Sacramento Bureau Chief George "Slumberin" Skelton think they know why the political system in California is broken. There are just too many darned Republican conservatives around mucking the works up. Now where in their long spiel do they mention much of what's happened is because the Democrats wanted it that way. I don't buy South's and Skelton's deathbed conversion for a moment to government reform. The truth is if the GOP hadn't picked up seats in the State Assembly and the State Senate they wouldn't even be picking up this rant about a dysfunctional State Legislature. The Republicans have the Democrats stopped cold on the budget and they know it and the only way they can hope to change it is to get rid of conservatives. I just hope the public sees through this "effective government" scam of theirs here. Gotta learn to love the gridlock they so lament.

They're on target on this issue. If the proposed system were in place for this election, the election for governor would have gone to a run-off where anything can happen.

Like they wanted Gray Davis to lose? Well on second thought, in hindsight they're right cause victory didn't turn out all that sweet. What they really want is more GOP RINOs and they killed them off through a redistricting scheme that made Democratic districts more liberal and Republican districts more conservative. Doncha just love the irony of it all.

I'd take a few RINOs and moderate Dems in exchange for some competitive elections. What we have now is pathetic.

I'll take a few more conservative Republicans and watch the liberal Democrats self-destruct in power.
