According to this week's edition of "Capitol Weekly" (Sacramento CA) 1,879 state employees were promoted during October 2002 alone - right in the thick of the "hiring freeze" instituted by Gov. Gray Davis due to the budget crisis in the state. LOL! Names of the people getting promoted, departments & SALARIES are printed in this paper! LOL!!

In addition, a total of 26,844 promotions DURING CURRENT STATE HIRING FREEZE have taken place. LOL!! Again, names of the lucky people who got promotions, along with department & SALARY, are printed, too. LOL!!!!

And finally, over 500 new state vacancies are advertised in this same edition of "Capitol Weekly".

Gov. Davis called a special session of the Legislature to deal with the budget crisis and the word went out that "thousands of state jobs" would be lost. What a crock!!! LOL!!!!!!!

Here's a sample of positions filled by promotions during October (in the height of the freeze): Staff Air Pollution specialist - $67,716/year; Business Taxes Specialist II - $69,156; Business Taxes Specialist I - $65,868; Deputy to Board member (Bd of Equalization) - $106,440; Associate Governmental Program Analyst - $46,980.

Sample of new state exams for this week: Associate Personnel Analyst - $3915-4759/month; Chief Counsel II Legal Affairs Division - $8242-9268/mo.; Landscape Technician - $2903-4044/month; Plumber I - $3407-3739/month; Programmer Analyst (specialist series) - $4110-6026/mo.

When I worked in state government, I always loved the promotions during hiring freezes. I'd type the person's name into the employee directory and see what other people had the same last name. Often enough, some person higher up in the department or in personnel would have the same last name. No, there is no nepitism at all in state government [rolls eyes].

Just like in business. Hiring freezes are an announcement you make to placate investors/ creditors/ the tax payers. But you don't actually stop hiring, or if you do it's a total coincidence.

Right. Davis is the "education governor". LOL!!! This state is beyond corrupt.

Y'know, as soon as I hit the send key, I realized that I was focusing too much on the smaller figure. Plus, there is such a wide range of programming type jobs that it really depends on the language, etc.

I was thinking more of mainframe work. And the higher figure is at the bottom of that range in Seattle. Of course, we don't have the cost of living and tax problems one has in California, even with the median house price at around $300k here right now.

The TAXES on the house I live in right now are twice what my rent payment was 20 years ago...

Interesting to note that the employees unions ALL endorsed Gov Davis and virtually every other democrat running for any office. All kinds of back-room deals and political shenanigans. OBVIOUSLY!

Of course the unions get a chunk. This state is a right to unvoluntarily contribute to a union state , you know :-)
