It appears that I owe Gov. Gray Davis an apology. Over the last four years, I've been accusing him of recklessly destroying our budget, our business climate and our power system with no strategy or concern for long-term costs. But a recent report from the California Independent System Operators (Cal-ISO, our state's incredibly effective energy managers) has now led to me to believe that I haven't been giving our governor enough credit - he's smarter than he looks!

If only the CA Republican Party could get their act together. Simon could have won with full support of the party, even with some of his campaign mistakes. Basically, every Rearodon (sp?) and Jones supporter either sat out or openly undercut the Simon effort. The Jones supporters were the worst, because they were mad at Bush for picking another candidate and mad at the conservatives for nominating Simon. I can recall syndicated columnist Debra Saunders pissing and moaning about Simon from the time he was nominated till election day. Then she had the gall to whine because Davis won.

So now I see why California is self-immolating. And I'm glad, as a non-Californian, that Bush will NOT make me pay the bills. And it's a good political strategy, too. What are the Democrats going to say? "Bush wouldn't save California." Bush replies, "How many of you want to bail out California's mismanagement?" He loses California's 55 electoral votes, which he wouldn't get anyway. But he gains respect in EVERY OTHER STATE.

they could create a financial flashpoint in the state that could ripple into the markets in general. also, imagine the daily media coverage of the "sick and the poor" not getting their benefits, schools closed, tens of thousands of government employees protesting. there could even be riots and civil disobedience. in short, it could get VERY ugly if the government there simply throws up their hands and lets everything implode. that type of scenario could be very bad for Bush.

to be honest, the state republicans there should just pass any and all tax increases the Dems want to avoid this scenario. as you say, Bush will never win California anyway and there is near zero chance of defeating either of their senators, so why allow that state to become a national issue? its not worth it, the business and people who can and want to leave CA have plenty of places to go.

I don't think the Democrats in power are in positive control. They only react when they are forced to at the last minute. One thing I worry about is that they see value in crashing the California real estate market. If a good percentage of the population goes underwater on their real estate loans the taxpayers will be unable to leave as state taxes go further through the roof. I can see the failed socialists building a new Berlin wall, one with an invisible leash.

He gets the attention he craves, for good or bad performance regardless, and abuses and kills the entity he is sworn to protect and serve.
