Edwards PAC Donor Indicted

Mississippi lawyer Paul Minor, a major contributor last year to U.S. Sen. John Edwards' political action committee, was indicted last week in a judicial corruption scandal.

Minor contributed $75,000 in so-called "soft money" to Edwards' PAC, the New American Optimists. Edwards used the organization to boost his visibility in the year leading up to the launch of the presidential race.

A conservative organization, the American Tort Reform Association, has called on Edwards to return Minor's money. But Edwards' spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri said that's not possible.

"The New American Optimists is no longer operational, and all the funds from the organization have been spent," Palmieri said.

Beyond that, she said, "I'm not going to comment on Mr. Minor's problems. I'm sure it's a difficult time for him and his family."

Minor is accused of providing help with loan payments to several judges in front of whom he practiced, including state Supreme Court Justice Oliver Diaz Jr.

Senator Edwards is only getting warmed up. He knows he will have to win the nomination or face defeat to reup his Senate seat. He's got very little influence whatsoever in the Senate. It's gotta be rough wrestling for power when Teddy, Hilary, Tommy and Pat Leahy are at the top.

Question:
If I make and sell signs for a living, am I allowed to "donate" $100,000 worth of signs to a campaign?

Where I'm going with this is related to Hollywood type folks
making public appearances on behalf of a candidate. If they
were to do the same thing on behalf of, say... the sign company
they could/would charge a fee. That's how they earn
money, that's their product/service they sell in order to
make a living. If I were to take their image/voice/music
and use it without their permission, they would come after
my wallet right?

So how can they "donate" the only or most important source
of their income (which has a real dollar value associated
with it) to a campaign without reporting the dollar value
and being limited to by the same real dollar contribution
limitations?
