The California recall has more surprises in store.

Wednesday, August 6, 2003 12:01 a.m.

The effort to recall California's Gov. Gray Davis has brought us one surprise after another. The next week could see yet more unexpected turns in what has become a classic political soap opera, including a possible postponement of the Oct. 7 recall vote.

Even the WSJ relegates Tom McClintock to the position of "also ran". This reminds me why I let my susbscription lapse.

Fox had a discussion last evening on the california recall, and McClintock's name was not even mentioned.

I guess the powers that be don't want a canditate they can't control, eh?

In modern America, yes. Ideally, no.

The WSJ, being made up of financial people, knows that Tom McClintock is the only candidate with the knowledge, experince, and the PLAN to straigthen out the mess that the socialists have made of California's finances. No other candidate has even casually mentioned in passing what they might do.

But knowing all that, instead they support a glitzy actor or a RINO who's campaign posters sport a big red star (subliminally indicating his preferences in economic systems).

The WSJ has become the CNN of finantial papers. Sorry, that's just my 2 cents worth.

Smopercod, as former President Clinton would say, I feel your pain. At the same time, it seems to also be the consensus of several committed activists I know who would love McClintock to win but don't think he has even a slim chance. If his best friends don't think he will win, I think that barring a miracle or intense support from somebody else, he won't win.

So I wouldn't blame the Journal for this attitude; it's all over the place.

Personally, I think Arnold will run. Why? Because otherwise it would be pretty silly to plan an appearance like this.

Why did he create this little drama about him running or not running? Because he's a showman. He gets millions of dollars worth of free publicity and a built-in free platform to introduce himself to the public. The only remaining question is how well he could do it.

I have a friend who, despite being a conservative, was very concerned about the recall, using many of the arguments I've heard from Davis supporters. His strongest one was that he felt this election was bad because so few people in the end would determine the outcome.

I told him that I think quite the reverse is true; I expect a high turnout (relatively speaking) because this election has actually gotten people INTERESTED. Davis versus Simon was widely thought (incorrectly in my view) as the colourless, experienced incompetent versus a totally unknown, inexperienced incompetent. As a result, it was hard for people to get excited.

If there's one thing we can say about this election, well, it's not boring.

McClintock is my favorite candidate, but he can't win. If I were one of the candidates with a shot, I would designate McClintock as my special advisor on the budget, and make it a team effort.

This a self-fulfilling prophecy. The media, in their arrogance, ASSume that McClintock has no chance (or don't want him to have a chance, depending upon how cynical you are).

Therefore, they treat him as a non-candidate and therefore ASSure that he has no chance.

Whatever happened to honest newspapers endorsing the man they thought would be best for the job, regardless of how much money he had raised?

The concept of actually considering what might be good for one's country is passe, apparently. Better to just go with the "popular" candidate - it's a safer editorial policy.

On Monday, journalists were intrigued to learn that Rep. Darryl Issa, a San Diego congressman who had given $1.7 million to put the recall on the ballot, had stopped paying the legal bills to defend against lawsuits challenging the recall's validity.

Since the recall has now been certified and scheduled for election shouldn't the State of California now defend it?

When since does the LAW matter to democrats? They run the state, so I doubt they would bother.
