'Do you believe in miracles?" Al Michaels shouted from Lake Placid one February afternoon in 1980. And millions of Americans had become believers.

For the unimaginable had happened: The United States Olympic hockey team - 20 young amateurs - had stunningly upset the prohibitively favored Soviet national team, hardened pros to a man.

I remember my brother and I listening to the Russian game live on his short wave radio. Unbelievable. I get goosebumps everytime I watch that HBO special on it.

That was the greatest moment in sports history in my lifetime. Perhaps only Jesse Ownens surpasses it.

Agreed. It was a snowy winter day last year, school was cancelled and the HBO special was the only station I could get. I curled up to the fire with the kids and we watched it together. They couldn't understand why I was sobbing by the end. It was, afterall, just a hockey game. But it wasn't, was it? It was so much more. It was the very essence of the American experience. It was the belief that we can be anyone, do anything. It was a moment of great pride during a time in which we doubted who we were.

When I look at the young men and women in our military today, I get much the same thrill of pride.

Up to those winter games of 1980 the greatest moment in sports was the Triple Crown duel between Affirmed and Alydar.

But Herbie and his "Boy's" put that to rest forever.
I think I held my breath for the entire final ten minutes
of that electrifying game.

I will never forget the looks on those Russian players faces. and the haunting chant from Lake Placid; USA !,USA !

Like yesterday.
Thanks Herb. R.I.P.
