GOVERNOR DAVIS ANNOUNCES THE POWER OUTAGES ON THE EAST COAST POSE NO THREAT TO THE CALIFORNIA POWER GRID 08/14/2003

SACRAMENTO

Governor Gray Davis made the following statement today regarding the power outages on the East Coast:

"My office has been briefed by the CAL ISO, and we have been assured the California electrical grid is not at risk. I have ordered the CHP, the Office of Homeland Security, and the National Guard to take all necessary actions to ensure California's electrical grid continues to function effectively. According to the ISO, we face no such dangers in California. Because we have added 6,000 MW of new power in the past three years, we are not vulnerable if one major power plant goes out of service. Other than airline delays because of the closure of airports in several cities, we do not expect Californians to be affected by this power outage."

Duh! I'm sure everybody in California feels a sense of relief knowing the Governor is on the job protecting them from East Coast blackouts. Did I detect a little air of smug superiority in his message?

Reminds me of King Canute standing on the beach and ordering the tide not to come in.

He probably felt obligated to release this statement because he was afraid so many would blame him for the problem!
