TV Sitcom Star John Ritter Dead Fri September 12, 2003 04:09 AM ET LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor John Ritter, who gained fame playing bumbling and lovable characters in a pair of television comedies decades apart, has died, a representative said on Friday. Details of the circumstances of his death were not immediately available.

Ritter was best known for his portrayal of Jack in the 1970s situation comedy "Three's Company" and recently he starred in the series "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter," a centerpiece of broadcaster ABC's upcoming fall schedule.

John Ritter was the son of country singer and actor Tex Ritter.

It's almost always like that. I wasn't much into "8 Simple Rules", but "Three's Company" was one of my favorite shows from childhood, though at one point my mom forbade me from watching it. I managed to sneak in a few episodes anyway :)

He was also very good in Sling Blade. It's a real pity.

Awwwwwwwwwww... dammit.

Never much of a Three's Company fan, myself... but: I always enjoyed his genial presence in such (comparatively) low budget flicks as Real Men and It.

Rest In Peace, John.

Sorry to hear this. What a shocker. One of my favorites was when he teamed up with Jim Balushi for "Real Men".

It was way off the beaten track, but I like a move like that once in a while, expecially during the early morning hours.
