WWJD?: Should Christians Always Do What Jesus Would Do?
Stand To Reason ^ | 10/23/2020 | Alan Shlemon

WWJD? Should we always do what Jesus would do? I think the answer is obvious: No.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Jesus. He’s God. There’s no person who is a greater arbiter of what’s right and wrong. There’s no person who could do better than he would do. Generally speaking, we should take our cues from his life and public ministry.

But if we are honest, we shouldn’t—and can’t—always do what Jesus would do. Here are three examples where Jesus did something we should not do.

Jesus made certain claims. In John 10:30, Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.” Newsflash: Jesus is God, and you are not. No offense. I’m sure you’re trying to be godly, but that only goes so far. Don’t say things like that.

Jesus had certain prerogatives. He cited Mosaic laws and “upgraded them.” For example, Jesus affirmed that adultery is sin but then provided his own addition: “But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matt. 5:27–28). Jesus can modify divine commands. You can’t. Deal with it.

Jesus had a different mission. His job was to be a ransom for many (Matt. 20:28). No person on the planet should attempt to participate in the plan he carried out. He emptied himself, took on human nature, and willingly went to the cross (Phil. 2:5–8) in order to fulfill a grand redemptive plan. Though we’re also involved in the Father’s plan, we don’t play the same role. Christ is the redeemer. We are his ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:20). Stay in your lane.

The WWJD question should prompt us not to do what Jesus did, but to answer that question exactly the way Jesus did. What would Jesus do? He would do the will of the Father (Jn. 6:38). We should do the same.

Do we know what Jesus would always do?

NIV John 5:
19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

So what would Jesus do?

How about - What Would God Do?

Well, I guess we should not go around creating a Universe.

“But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart”...

Maybe after the first immediate glance you can stop yourself.

But biology is gonna do what it does that first second.

Especially if you’re 18 and hormones are through the roof.

He did say “in your heart”. He didn’t say in reality.

Try not to lust and gain composure as quickly as possible.

We were made a certain way. We can get our impulses out of control once we feel them.

But we’re gonna feel them many times.

If even for a second or two.

Add to that Jesus declined to meet with his own mother outside a house.
Jesus said the people around him were his mother.

I know what He did but don’t know what He would do.

RE: I know what He did but don’t know what He would do.

Would Jesus vote for someone who is for aborting babies or redefining the meaning of marriage?

Follow the commandments, love your neighbor as you love yourself, pray to the father and ask for forgiveness for your sins and forgive those who do wrong against you, accept Jesus as Lord, pray for the holy spirit to take refuge in your heart, give graciously and with joy all that you can give to others, and answer the Lord’s call to do good works without hesitation. These are the things we all are called to do. They are all things Jesus did (except ask for forgiveness since he was the last righteous man on Earth).

What Jesus would do is
- continue to forgive the sins of the world, until the end
- return in glory to make a new heaven and earth
- and reign forever with His redeemed in the above

So, if you can do those things, go for it.

But he might not meet his own mother outside the door after she made a long trip.
I would not have known he would do that.

This has long been a pet peeve of mine and I am glad this author explained why.

However, you can redeem your old WWJD bracelet. Untie the leather knot and remove one of the Ws. Now it says WJD which can stand for What Jesus Did! That is the gospel and that is what should be the guiding force of our life.

To look at a woman is to lust after her? I disagree.

We all have eyes. Noticing beauty in God’s creation is not wrong.

If we are driving around, and notice a woman in a swimsuit there is nothing wrong with thinking she is pretty. But, if we drive around the block in order to come back for a longer look...that is a little different.

YES!! I agree.

I guess I misinterpreted lust to mean the physical events that just naturally occur in young men upon seeing a beautiful woman dress sexy.

I don’t want to go into detail at all!! :)

But that is not lust. It’s a nervous system reaction and not lust.

But since you described what lust is...now I have to pray for forgiveness once again!!

Though not nearly as much at 52 as I would have at even 42.

Some sins get easier to avoid as we age :)

Keep in mind that grabbing a bullwhip, turning the tables over and chasing the moneychangers out of the temple is always an option.
