The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association is defending the design of a new pier it plans to build in the Jersey Shore community, despite backlash from some residents who say the structure too closely resembles a Christian cross on a public beach.
The religious nonprofit organization’s chief operating officer, Jamie Jackson, said the group makes “no apology for that we love the fact that it looks like a cross.”
When asked if Jackson’s statement meant the beach pier was, in fact, intentionally designed to look like a Christian cross, Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association President Michael Badger said only, “it did not escape our notice.”
“The symbolism is in cooperation with its effective use,” he said. “Different people will see different things. What the importance of it is, kind of (depends on) your perspective."
“It is obvious to many people what the shape is,” Badger said.
The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, a Methodist ministry, is using $1.3 million of its funds and donated money to build the pier and other beachfront facilities.
Under a complex charter, the association has authority over the land, beach and boardwalk in Ocean Grove, which is a small seaside section of Neptune Township in Monmouth County.

Ocean City NJ is one of many dry town along the coast of NJ. Can’t buy alcohol there but the store just across the bridge does a booming business.
Or the noisier sort of atheists. They’re the worst.
Modern journalism as an exercise in non-information! How many complaints is 'some'? Are the complainants actual residents, visitors or a mix? I would assume(?) that some is more than a couple but less than a hyena pack.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT! In this era of cancel culture and monument iconoclasm, it appears that a small group of loud and determined protestors can make governments take immediate actions that, if put to a VOTE, would show how little support there may be for the vocal side. Without any doubt, I am certain that this is known to such groups and thus becomes a deliberate tactic to get the action done at haste. This is antithetical to our historic norms and, as such, is how we are in the mess of today!
Ocean Groves is also a dry town. On Sunday beaches don’t open until after noon hour. Oh yeah it’s a Methodist town alright.

A word to those who are offended: DON’T GO THERE! Ocean Grove is less than 1% of the Jersey Shore.

Honestly, there is not a more space efficient design available to accommodate as many people as possible.
The alphabet victim group can go use another pier that does not offend their sensibilities.
Ocean Grove used to block off the entrances to town from midnight Sat. night to dusk on Sunday. No traffic was allowed during that time except for fire and police.
Design is purely logical if the pier was intended to allow easy and prolific access to ocean viewing or fishing...
