I think the Millenium is a literal thing, but it does not begin until the coming of the Messiah to take us to Heaven.
I think it will be a time of rest and growth and maybe a bit like a boot camp because there will be so much we need to learn to live an eternal life.

According to the Revelation of John, Messiah comes literally down out of the clouds to touch down on planet Earth and rescue Israel. At that time the body of believers saved by Grace through faith will have been gone from the earth for aat least seven years but will return with Jesus for His touchdown. Following His utter defeat of the armies of antiChrist, all surviving alive Jews will be brought to Jerusalem in a 'harpazo' rapture (like Philip had after baptizing the Ethiopian), to usher in the 1000 years reign of Jesus while Satan is chained up. The Earth conditions for living will be amazing during the millennial reign.

Jesus Christ’s Millennial Reign begins after Armageddon.
The saints already dead or taken will come with Him (Revelation chapter 19).
