I believe I once read that the Uffizi was one of the best five art museums in Europe. I don't remember then all but the Hermitage was the only one I had not seen. I thought the Uffizi the best of those I had.

The Kuntshistoriches in Vienna is spectacular as well, plus it has a representation of 20th C art lacking in some others.The Borghese in Rome is vastly underrated as well.Munich has a great museum, then you get the smaller, more personal ones like the Wallace Collection in London, or the Courtald too.But the Frick beats them for portrait work.
