Earth to Parsky, Dreier, et al ...

Simon’s smashing victory, and Riordan’s collapse, show how much GOP ‘experts’ know about winning. Nominees: take note.

George Neumayr

George Neumayr is a member of California Political Review’s editorial board.

Conservatives told the White House, Gerry Parsky, and the George Skeltons of the media that the GOP establishment and the Republican grassroots run along two different tracks: the former toward the left, the latter toward the right.

The establishment didn’t listen. Arrogantly assuming they could impose their will on rank-and-file Republicans, they shilled shamelessly for Riordan’s ruinous campaign, all the while browbeating conservatives for not backing a real “winner.”

Bill Simon’s victory leaves a considerable amount of egg on the face of this crowd. Weasels like Parsky and Congressman David Dreier must now explain what particular insight into “winning” they possess — now that is clear their horse couldn’t even win a Republican primary against a political novice.

The California congressional delegation sold its soul for Riordan (excepting those few wise enough to shun the mayor’s bandwagon) and got nothing in return, save the scorn of ordinary Republicans wised-up to their lame Machiavellian games. The delegation assumed Riordan would play the pliable stooge, but instead he made stooges of it, as he ran an utterly self-indulgent, self-destructive campaign in which he took great glee in alienating Republicans.

Did Riordan even want to win? Maybe not — though it is odd he would choose to make his political swan song an embarrassing loss in a race most assumed would be a cakewalk. It is altogether fitting that Riordan’s joke of a campaign would conclude with two nights in San Francisco as part of a “comedy routine” — Riordan’s idea of last-minute campaigning.

Simon, on the other hand, ran a “disciplined” campaign, as even the left-wing Los Angeles Times had to admit. While Riordan was screwing around with the likes of Barbara Lee and John Burton, Simon was assiduously courting the Republican grassroots. His focus on tax cuts and his calls for retaining a real Republican identity made it easy for him to run through the enormous opening left by Riordan’s insulting liberalism.

Will Simon, who won the primary as a conservative Republican, now run in the general election as a cautious centrist? The media and the very same Republicans who stupidly backed Riordan will no doubt pressure him to do so — once again in the name of “victory,” a subject about which they know nothing.

Simon shouldn’t listen. His conservative message of tax cuts and limited government will not scare Californians, as polls indicate they feel no particular loyalty to the liberalism of Davis. Moreover, Simon’s moderate personality will counteract the inevitable liberal attempts to demonize him as an “extremist.”

Yes, Davis is a formidable challenge for Simon. But if Simon makes the race a referendum on Davis’s colossal mismanagement of the state, he can win.

Perhaps conservatives in the state owe the Riordans, Parskys, and Dreiers a debt of gratitude. In hamhandedly trying to kill the Party’s conservatism, they may unintentionally have resurrected it.

Hello. My name is Seymour. Don't laugh. My mother gave me that name. Have you contributed to Free Republic's quarterly fundraiser yet? Why not? Do you want me to get very angry? Do you want me to ring my little bell and get my big brother over here? He rides a Segway. He kick you in the rear end and make you cry. Don't make me have to call him over here. Go here and give something to keep the Free Republic running. Even if it is only five dollars. It's easy. And it will make me feel good not to have to get angry with you. Have a good day and Freep on!

This article sums up my feelings about the whole Riorden debacle exactly although it fails to lay responsibility for this travesty where culpability is due--squarely at the feet of the White House. It was Bush and his liberal GOP Establishment advisors that tried to force the ultraliberal partial birth abortion extremist Richard Riorden upon the California GOP. When the liberal Republicans failed to takeover the California State Party by democratic means one year ago, it was Bush and his advisors who successfully instigated a palace coup to replace conservative control of the California GOP and ensure its takeover by a liberal Bush loyalist--Parsky. Sure I blame Drier and kind--but after all he was just another Bush loyalist following orders from this politically center-left White House. I sincerely hope that the size and scope of the Riorden defeat and the Simon victory will convince Bush to start supporting conservatives for public office for a change, not ultraliberal RINOs like Riorden.

This says it all. Simon has a likeable personality, and a compassionate background that makes him an ideal standard-bearer for not only conservatives, but the Republican Party.

Simon is, and has always been, our best hope at defeating Davis. I hope the GOP establishment finally sees the light.

Go Simon!

Just like 'gentlemen prefer blondes'; RINOS prefer democRATS to satisfy their lusts.

A 'bump' to those who really want America and California 'Right'.

Memo to PARSKY--get right or get LEFT, Republicans are to support the winner of the primary against the DemocRAT. If you ain't willing to 'get with' the program, maybe you should get out of the program, and take the 'Whino RINOS' with you.
