With Bill Simon preparing for high-profile Republican backing, Democratic governor Gray Davis went on the offensive yesterday, charging that the GOP candidate is "out of touch and out of sync" with California.

During an appearance in San Francisco, Davis called Simon's decision to hire an activist with the controversial Traditional Values Coalition "a big mistake" and "an attempt to lead us in a direction most Californians don't want to go."

I'm happy for Simon if the GOP and White House are supporting him. They couldn't have cared less about Bret Schundler and NJ last year.

They couldn't have cared less about Bret Schundler and NJ last year.

Someone told me it was the local and state party politics, not the White House, that messed Schundler's race up. The White House was preoccupied with the recent terrorist attack at the time, but Bush okayed a mailer endorsing Schundler to go out under his name as I recall.

It was too soon after the September attacks for the President to jump into partisan politics. It was unfortunate, but not because they could have cared less.

You're right about the local GOP being against Schundler and sabotaging support for his election effort.

But with just two governor races last year, by the end of October the WH could have dispatched Rep. Senators in the President's name to help Bret. Nothing. Not one party leader helped. It was a giveaway to the Dems. Now we are living with the fallout. McGreevey is well on his way to becoming this state's worst governor. And he's been on the job less than three months.

If I were a member of the party of Bill Clinton, I wouldn't be going around shouting the word "Sink" in front of voters.

Don't get me started.

Dubya should have given Bret the same treatment that he is giving Simon.

Maybe, just maybe, the results last November knocked some sense into his advisors.

...[pro-abortion extremist Davis] suggested he would fight efforts by Simon to "change the topic," as the GOP businessman has promised, away from divisive social issues like abortion.

Like I said, that was such a mistake. It's a defensive remark. "We're embarrassed; we don't want to talk about it." Whether or not that was meant, that is what it said. That guy needs a talking-to.

Make Davis change the topic. Pursue him. And don't accept the premise that social-conservatives are pariahs. Take it to him on that; don't let him get away with it. What is he really saying? Should Sheldon's group be banned? Should social conservatives be interred? Is that his litmus-test? Do we still have to pay taxes? Pay taxes, but don't participate -- is that it?

Gray Davis has something against Phil Sheldon, a decent and principled guy who's an aide with the Bill Simon campaign because he believes in "traditional values?" Oh I'm sure Governor Davis, your line of attack may work in the gay heeled wards of San Francisco, but its a turn-off in the rest of the state. Please keep imploding. You're the one who's showing himself to be out of sync with the California mainstream!

I'm amused; nobody else caught the end of the article:

... Davis said, after an appearance at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood Center in support of a bill that would require California's three investor-owned utilities to provide more energy from renewable sources, such as wind, solar, geothermal and biomass energy.
This bill, of course, is going to raise the cost of producing energy, and probably pretty dramatically at that.

Does this guy ever learn?

McGreevey looked like a mafia weasel. Am I being unjustifiably slanderous in my assessment? I really know nothing about him.

Bush also did radio spots for Schundler? Was he speaking or did the ad just mention the President was endorsing him?

It was a script Bush read from. Both Earley and Schundler got radio ads of Bush reading a script.

I don't know about "mafia", but "weasel" is a pretty good start.
