As Davis seeks re-election, he marshals government for his campaign :
The Sacramento Bee ^ | Tuesday, April 2, 2002 | Dan Walters -- Bee Columnist

There's not a single political handicapper who doesn't consider Gov. Gray Davis to be the odds-on favorite to defeat Republican challenger Bill Simon and win a second term, despite Davis' relatively poor standing in public opinion polls.

Could Simon beat the odds and win? It's possible, particularly if events over the next seven months -- such as the state's budget crisis -- further darken Davis' image. But it's not likely, given Simon's ideology, which is several notches to the right of the California center line, a fact that Davis & Co. will drive home repeatedly.

Davis touts the fact that 500,000 children have been added to the "Health Families" program during his term (a program established by the Feds with matching federal money to insure children above the Medicaid/poverty line who come from families that have no health insurance). What Davis won't say as he takes credit is that he hates the program.

Grayout makes me sick. I want to get better. Please, Lord, help the good Mr. Simon. I will do what I can...

Contreras-Sweet touts Davis' past and future accomplishments in infrastructure -- an issue on which Simon has been criticizing him -- and informs real estate agents that "the governor has created 800,000 new jobs in California," has embarked on a massive transportation improvement plan, is building numerous new power plants and "is investing $9.2 billion to make schools in every region of the state modern, spacious and safe." From her words, one might think that Davis is paying for it out of his own pocket.

I guess this needs to be seen by the Calpowercrisis readers!

I think Walters has gone over to the other side!!!(BARF ALERT for sure)!!!

"Building a better California. It's what every generation of Californians has done before. Combine a long-term plan with the leadership of Governor Davis, the talent of the people of California, and it's exactly what we will do again."

Great. There went supper.

It is interesting coming from Walters. He has been one who has shined the light on Grayout's less than candid behaviour as governor. Here, he seems resolved to Grayout's eventual victory. Heck, even the SF Chronicle ran a nice piece this morning showing Grayout's true colors. A little birdie told me though that Simon knows what it will take on the GOTV front and will do his darndest to make it happen. Gotta run, see you 'round, thanks for your posts....

This sure seems different than what Walters has been writing it seems to me. Probably was ordered to write this up to help Davis.

DID you see this jewel:

But it's not likely, given Simon's ideology, which is several notches to the right of the California center line, a fact that Davis & Co. will drive home repeatedly.

Personally, I'm hoping for a very hot summer.

And how many notches to the left of center is Davis? My guess is Simon is closer to center (if defined accurately as the average of public opinion, not MEDIA opinion) than Davis.

If Simon repeats the way Ronald Reagan took the governorship he has a good chance of beating the socialist davis.
