Teacher bargaining bill passes first committee test

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Despite steadily building opposition, a bill that would expand teachers' collective bargaining rights to include textbook selection and curriculum planning passed its first test Tuesday in an Assembly committee.

The Assembly Public Employees, Retirement and Social Security Committee voted 4-2 to send AB2160 to the Education Committee. The panel's two Republicans, Anthony Pescetti of Rancho Cordova and Mike Briggs of Fresno, voted no.
