"Soda Tax Bill" Author Cancels Hearing Date

California Democrat State Senator Deborah Ortiz pulled SB 1520, the "Soda Tax" bill, two days before it was to be heard by the Senate Taxation and Revenue Committee. A new hearing date has been scheduled May 8. It is possible that Oriz will either ammend or drop the bill before that date. SB 1520 will charge a tax of up to 2 cents per twelve ounces of beverages containing sugar and fruit drinks with less than 50% fruit juice. The tax was expected to raise $369 million to fund educational programs to indoctrinate children to the supposed link between soda and obesity. One of the rotund Senator's most rediculous assertions is that one soda a day causes a 60% increase in the chances of childhood obesity. This was seen to many as a gateway tax that would lead to taxation of other foods based on sugar and fat content. A bill is already being drafted that would tax foods with high sugar content to fund dental care.

Senator Ortiz's office, as well as members of the Taxation and Revenue Committee and other Senators, has been flooded with calls in opposition to the proposed bill. Tax and Rev. Committee Chairman, Democrat Jack Scott has expressed that he has serious questions about this tax in light of California's projected $20 billiion budget shortfall due to Governor Davis' bungling of the power debacle last summer. Senator Scott is witholding all decisions on tax cuts or increases until the revised budget projections are released in May.

Other tax increases being considered include SCA 12, a 5 cents per bullet tax on amunition and the latest, AB 1058, which could lead to a 2 cents per mile tax on all passenger vehicles, 50 cents per gallon tax increase on gas and up to $3,500 in fees on SUV's and light duty trucks.

I left Senator John Burton off of the list of Democrat members of the Taxation and Revenue Committee. It really doesn't matter about him though, he hasn't yet met a tax he doesn't like. He can be reached at 916.445.1412.

The 'challenged' Senator Ortiz misunderstood her constituency. They were asking her to consider a 'VAT' tax, and she introduced a bill that would, in effect, have been a FAT tax.(As a RAT, every TAX is a good tax, so it will probably be reintroduced with language to the effect that it is 'for the children').

A good example of what happens when the wrong party controls all facets of the government.

One correction - the "soda tax" is not the gateway tax leading to taxes on other fatty and sugar-laden foods. The cigarette tax is the gateway tax leading to the soda tax, etc. Always start at the beginning, it makes the problem easier to understand.

"The cigarette tax is the gateway tax leading to the soda tax, etc. Always start at the beginning, it makes the problem easier to understand."

The 'liquor tax'(when prohibition didn't work) leading to the tobacco tax.

'Sin taxes' of every flavor makes a pretty fair case for legalization of a few 'drugs', doesn't it?

Licensing and regulation fees are 'taxes' with a twist.

Bottom line--All 'taxes' are social engineering by government.

Let's all vote liberal and just give them our entire paycheck and let them baby us for a change. Why should we have to do all the work? The compassionate Rats know better and its time we let them run things. Let's see if they take better care of us than they take care of the government they're running.

The cigarette tax (the last one voted on) was a scam. Also the states law suits against the tobacco companies was for self gain the states could have cared less about the illness of their constituients. http://www.irrc.org this site will tell you the states that reinvested their "awards" back into tobacco.

< /sarcasm >

I believe that has been tried in Russia and Europe (except possibly for the 'voting' thing).

I noticed how advanced and 'progressive' their technology has gotten and their excellent medical care, and their low unemployment rates with a high standard of living.

I'm sure your're right, goldstategop, 'liberal' is definitely the 'WAY' to lift ALL ships -- NOT!!!(Perhaps, the 'elite aristocracy' does relatively well at the expense of the peasants.)

That's OK, with the new terror warning about a possible threat to supermarkets and malls, I won't be able to go and by my Cactus Cooler anyway. Good thing there isn't a warning on liquour stores, I am already paying taxes on my Red Hook.

Of course this will all be moot due to the fact that we won't be able to buy cars here in California. We'll all be hoofing it to the local store. Mine is mile away downhill. I'll burn off my fat in no time walking back home.

Heck, there is always the wonderful Anaheim water. Yum, nice and crunchy!!!
