That's right. The essence of the Rats' attitude to the state budget deficit basically amounts to one of "Let's charge it all now and worry how to pay it all off later." If Gray Davis is not going to be around for a second term he might as well have fun and leave to Bill Simon the headache of cleaning up the mess.

I think that Davis is going to use so many smoke and mirrors to avoid raising taxes because it's an election year. He'll lie, beg, borrow, steal, put forth a two-year budget, move money, assume revenue increases ... anything. Then next year, he'll hike up taxes if he wins, or if he loses, Simon will be left holding the bag.
I would much rather have Simon in there to fix things than Captain Queeg.
