Dan Walters is the top political analyst of California politics, and his comments are reinforced by today's news about Davis' 14-point lead over Simon in the Field Poll.

It is so sad that Simon is such a flawed candidate. California faces one of the grimest set of choices between candidates in my memory. I suspect a majority of Califonia voters agree, or soon will.

In a San Francisco Chronical
column about slave reparations in California, Debra Saunders also took Simon's campaign to task for failing to make an issue of Davis' support for reparations:
This could be a thorny issue for Davis in his re-election. A 2001 Fox News poll found that 81 percent of registered voters oppose the U.S. government paying African Americans reparations. (Lucky for Davis, GOP challenger Bill Simon doesn't see this as a campaign issue. Simon spokesman James Fisfis told me, "That's something we probably would not comment on.")

He could use Bush's trip next week to get a fresh start. Let's see if he takes the opportunity.

Walters is a putz and the Field poll is always inaccurate in favor of the Dems. They poll all adults, not likely voters or even registered voters, but ALL ADULTS. They predicted that every Democrat would win Governor for the past 25 years when only one actually did.
They also had Riordan beating Simon by a wide margin only two weeks before the primary.
Walters is a cranky old curmudgeon who spends his days longing to be able to write for the LA Times.
Just by winning the primary over the media's darling candidate -- not to mention all the pundits -- Simon has shown that he has what it takes to bring on the surprise upset.
GO SIMON!
