With polls in his favor and $30 million in his campaign war chest, Democratic Gov. Gray Davis was angling for a smooth sail to his 2002 re- election -- until this week, when he ran into what Republicans hope will become the "perfect storm" of campaign issues for his opponent, Bill Simon.

I love this statement:

"Every time that reporters and other people are turning over rocks, there are a lot of cockroaches running -- and they're all running for the center of the Capitol," Walsh said. "And I see Bill Simon holding a big can of Raid."

You always hear of Davis' 30 million war chest and how hard it is to beat him, but Davis is a f**k-up. His true, ugly nature will remind voters why he needs to be unemployed with extreme prejudice.

I think most folks are missing the good news in this article. This reporter seems to think Simon might win.

Now, as all good liberals know, conservative politicians never win because of people agreeing with them. They only win because their opponents mess up, or they pull the wool over the people's eyes, or they get corporate interests behind them to outspend their opponents, etc., ad nauseum.

So this article is slanting the story as if Bill Simon didn't have a chance in the world until the Oracle thing came out. Notice the reference to Davis leading the polls, which is untrue except for one biased poll. And the one on Simon "seizing the offensive for the first time", when he's been on the offensive since he first started taking Riordan apart.

In short, this guy is setting up for a Simon win. He's probably already written his post-election editorial, explaining that people don't really agree with Simon, but "they voted against Davis because of the Oracle thing, etc. etc." That way he can continue to keep his own head in the sand and deny that half the people in California are not liberal idiots.
