California: Who was applying the pressure for the Oracle deal -- and why?

During a marathon legislative hearing into the Oracle computer software scandal -- one that ended after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday -- state Sen. Steve Peace, D-El Cajon, framed the matter as "a fundamental question of who was pushing this."

Indeed it is. Why did high-level aides to Gov. Gray Davis, including his all-purpose troubleshooter, Susan Kennedy, give Oracle a $95 million no-bid contract whose provisions were not even checked by state lawyers or verified by state financial analysts?

The picture that emerged from the many hours of testimony is that while career civil servants were very leery about the contract, someone -- who has yet to be identified -- was overruling them.

Gee, I wonder who would have the power to overrule them.

Kennedy is more or less publicly shouldering responsibility for doing it, but her motives are unclear.

Another example of culpable Democrats hiding behind a woman's skirts. And of a woman all too willing to let them do it.
