As long as Gov. Gray Davis has been in politics, he has been known for the joy he takes in separating campaign donors from their money. What most politicians do with reluctance, Davis, by all accounts, does with relish. His ability to ask for $1 million with a straight face has made him the most successful fund-raiser in the history of California politics.

I fear that in People's California, Davis is like Stalin - utterly evil, universally hated, thoroughly corrupt, yet unbeatable.

When more people become aware of the Davis scandals with Oracle, Accenture, prison union, etc., the voters will begin to notice that Davis mixes state business too much with his own fundraising. This may weaken his base, by making voters disenchanted and apathetic. If Simon energizes the conservatives, he'll have a really good chance.

I think at the rate things are going Davis will be wondering why he's been handed indictments from the Department of Justice for violating Rackteer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) laws just when the election season is underway in September. :-)

This is of no import to Davis. If anything, having a functional moral compass is a tremendous liability in California, a state which makes Sodom and Gomorrah look like Quaker villages.
