Vermont-style civil unions. Reparations for slavery. The state's burgeoning homeless population.

These are heavy-duty, emotional issues, the kind that a politically cautious governor would normally want to avoid.

Not these days.

Gov. Gray Davis, known for his centrist positions and an incremental approach to governing, has in recent weeks taken some unusually strong -- and public -- liberal stances.

No problem. Davis' pandering to the Left will tend to bring the Gramscian cockroaches out of the woodwork and into the daylight where we can all get a good look at them.

If Davis wins, he'll put the squeeze on even tighter, pushing Kali toawrds open civil warfare at an ever faster pace.

ACW II - let's roll.

There ain't much room on the highway for Davis to veer in that particular direction.

Davis is so bad that now even his 'base' has gotten shaky. There is a real possibility that the 'left' will vote 'Green' and 'Socialist' this November, if they vote at all. He brought this on himself by addressing his needs rather than our needs in the summer and fall of 2000.

Part of the reason Davis won by such a large margin in 1998 is that he painted himself (ludicrously, in retrospect) as a moderate, centrist, "good government" candidate. Some early clashes with the left-wingers in the California legislature seemed to confirm this, and cost him a lot of good will among doctrinaire leftists. Now he is trying to get that group back, while hoping that inattentive moderate voters will remember the 1998 image instead of the 2002 reality.

Good luck...

"In a Field Poll released last week, only 53 percent of Democrats surveyed said they approve of Davis' job performance."

53% of DemocRATS. I read that as 'low voter turnout' in November. Now, if 'voter fraud' in Los Angeles and San Francisco can be curtailed, it will be Simon and sanity returning to Sacramento.

Interesting article. While discussing the Democratic voting base and how to manipulate it, there is no mention of the power crisis and only one line in the article is dedicated to the budget mess. I guess it shows that the Democratic base is simply a variety of unrelated special interest groups in California.

Hmmm. I wonder what we could do to encourage Nader to run for governor?

But because teachers are frustrated with Davis' emphasis on standardized testing and accountability, this election might be different.

Don't forget regeging on the bonus he promised teachers for improved test scores. You can mess with people's taxes, I guess, but mess with their pay, and you're gonna suffer the consequences. I don't think even the CTA bill will bring the teachers back into the fold.

Here's a blast from the past that I found. Davis holds hands with a terrorist.

That he has to veer to the left this late in the game and pander to his extreem base doesn't say very good things about his prospects this fall.

Hmmm. Looks like the image expired from the Corbis cache. Sorry. Go over to Corbis.com and search for Gray Davis. I think it's on the second page of results. Davis is strolling hand-in-hand with Arafat.
