"The union opposes using plastic pipe in homes because it is cheaper and easier to install than traditional copper pipe. California is one of only two states that do not allow plastic pipe in homes."

So the union wanted this ruling simply as a way to put handymen or do it yourselfers out of business. I've heard plumbers complain that pvc makes it too easy for people who are not plumbers to fix pipes.

It's really nothing more than price fixing, which is one of the hallmarks of socialism.
