Interesting that Perenchio gave so much to Davis, considering the Coastal Commission's recent definition of virtually all Malibu as "environmentally sensitive habitat". The upshot is that virtually all development in Malibu is theoretically prohibited. Perenchio wants to build a massive development in the civic center that I believe most citizens oppose. Davis appoints the Coastal Commissioners.

I went to a community meeting of Malibu residents that protested the Coastal Commission's actions. Needless to say, A Jerrold Perenchio did not attend. The people who showed up feeling powerless were extremely lucky middle class people who had lived in Malibu for years, since when you could buy on Cliffside Drive for $70,000. I doubt most of them thought of themselves as rich, even though they are. (A house on Cliffside Drive now goes for a cut rate $2,500,000 or more; not half bad, really).

That aside, the Coastal Commission is an exceptionally cruel government agency. So much so that the citizens of Malibu may well wind up voting against Davis even though most of them are normally democrats.
