"He's got to convince people that this issue has put him back in the game," said Bruce Cain, a UC Berkeley political science professor.

Simon's campaign appeared to founder after his stunning, come-from-behind defeat of former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan in the March primary.

Yes, I see. One questionable Field Poll showing a 14-point Davis lead (for no apparent reason) leads to two statements here claiming the campaign is foundering. Guess nobody told that to the President of the United States when he held a massive fundraiser for Simon a few weeks back.

Then came a Field Poll revealing that Simon, virtually even with Davis in March, had plunged to 14 points behind the governor.

Okay, one outlying poll is equal to a floundering, hopeless campaign, but four separate polls showing Simon leading by 2-7 points equals "virtually even."

Nope, no agenda here.

This reminds me of a scheme for recounting ballots:
Recount until you achieve the desired result. Then stop and block all other recounts.

Here, the liberals take polls until they achieve their desired results, despite a high error margin and small sample.
Then they stop taking any more polls, keep repeating the desired results, and neglect to mention any other polls.

Perhaps the idea is: keep repeating it and some people will eventually believe it.
I wonder how much longer they can keep quoting the April Field Poll; it was taken before the Oracle scandal was publicized in all newspapers.

"The reality for Simon is that voter dissatisfaction with Davis doesn't necessarily translate into support for him."

REWRITE: The reality for DAVIS is that voter dissatisfaction with Davis doesn't necessarily translates into support a LOSS for him.
