In his youth Gene Burdick, U. of California, Berkeley, Political Science professor and author (the Ugly American, etc.,) was greatly concerned that politics as practiced in Southern California made it frighteningly easy for an immoral individual to become the Governor of California. His fears, memorialized in his great National Book Award winner, "The Ninth Wave", have been realized with Gay Davis.

Burdick followed my father around during his salad days in S.California politics and borrowed a lot of things Pop did for his Ninth Wave. The poker game and sign ploys come to mind. One of my high school teachers criticized the book as unrealistic so I brought Pop to class to speak for 10 minutes. That was fun.
