Former Oracle Corp. lobbyist Ravi Mehta backed out of his promise to testify before a legislative committee Wednesday amid new disclosures about the tactics he used to influence state officials on the company's behalf.

In one instance, according to an e-mail message provided by Oracle, Mehta recommended that it financially sponsor a college project undertaken by the son of a senator who had been "extremely critical" of the company's $95 million no-bid software contract with the state.

They really don't have any power except to ask questions, yada yada. Bill Lockyer, a liberal Democrat, is the Attorney General and can shut down the hearings at any time by claiming he's going to prosecute someone ... and then drag that out indefinitely, and all behind closed doors. However, I don't know how well that would play to the media, so I think this whole thing needs to be watched very closely. While I have no love for the liberal press, they definitely don't like be excluded from anything.

I wouldn't put anything past Lockyer. He is a bigger crook than Bray Davis (sneakier too).
