This so unfair. Its not Gov. Blands fault, dagnabit, I mean the Gov. has to busy shaking down unions, biz, anybody with two nickels, to raise much needed campaign $$ so he could be re-elected and stop those rascally republicans who want to destroy California`s lousy schools. He is a hero.gag

... en los ultimos lugares en matematica, lectura, y ciencia
... in the last places in math, reading and science

"in the last places" could mean, say, the bottom ten places, not necessarily the last place in each subject.

Bill Simon's ad is truthful, while the analyses of Gray Davis' ads showed Davis' were deceitful.
But, this article still tries to read exaggerations into Simon's ads, so that the writer can then disparage the straw men claims.

Davis' claim about test scores isn't quite true, either, even though this article uses it as the bottom line. How can scores be compared when the tests themselves have changed and when the thresholds have been lowered?

Davis promised that the state would take over failing schools. After three years of no improvements or even of declines, he simply changed the definition of a "failing school." Whereas many scores of schools qualified as failing under the old standards, now at most a handful are failing, implying that the rest are all "passing."

Davis bloated the state government 37%, yet still couldn't find enough money to take over the failing schools as he promised three years ago.

The mere notion that the S.F. Chronicle is presenting itself as providing unbiased analysis is laughable. When the time is right the SF Chron, SJ Mercury News, LA Times, Sac Bee will all clack their heels together and shout "Vote Democrat".

You are right on with your analysis. Gray Davis is interested in one thing, and one thing only: raising campaign cash so he can stay in power.

Gray Davis has no interest in improving our schools. ALL CHILDREN deserve a quality education. Considering the dismal failure of our public schools -- the schools that are supposed to be educating the next generation of responsible citizens -- I'm shocked that more parents aren't clamoring for attention.

Republicans need to realize that Hispanic parents and white parents and Asian parents ... we are AMERICANS, and as AMERICANS we want a quality education for our children. The Democrats have failed in education. Now, for the first time in decades, Republicans are being recognized on the education issue. Why? Well, our ideas are better, but that's not why. It's because the Democrat ideas have FAILED ... and people are now willing to look at anything, and we Republicans have good solutions to our educational problems ... and I think that Bill Simon has the guys and determination to address them.

It's very sad that I have to not only pay taxes to fund public schools, but I can't send my kids there. My kids go to a parochial school. Why? Because I can't bear the thought of my beautiful little girls being asked sexual questions when they are 8, 9, and 10 (as happened recently in Palmdale), or shown a film on how it's OK to have sex before marriage and this is how to put on a condom (shown to 16 and 17 year olds in Elk Grove) and numerous other programs that are solely intended to subvert parental authority on moral teachings. (Don't listen to your parents or your church, we understand that all kids are going to have sex and we just want to make sure you're "safe". Whoops, got pregnant? We'll take you for an abortion, your parents will never know.)

Anyway, I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I AM PISSED.
