No way, I might be wrong on the name since it's been so many years but I believe the Senator that set it up was Milton Marks, commie quo non. If it wasn't him, it was someone just as bad.

I think that Davis did something that really made them mad would be the only reason to support Simon unless they figure that Simon is a sure winner and they want to send out their voter guide with Simon at the top and all the rest of their suggested candidates from the far left.

That senario seems to me the probable reason.
