The first fallout from the state's budget impasse could land on 1.4 million Californians who rely on welfare checks to survive, including thousands of foster children.

A top official in Gov. Gray Davis' administration warned Thursday that if no spending plan is in place by Monday, the state will withhold funds from some of the Bay Area's neediest families, and Santa Clara and other counties will have to struggle to pick up the costs.

"I can't afford another $800, $900 a month and afford rent. It just wouldn't be possible.''

fINE. If you're so concerned about high rent rates just insist that your local government encourages new buildings to be built. Oh wait, that would offend the enviro nuts, the rent control nazis and weaken your arguments for being dependant on the state huh. Can't have that.

I've got a "crazy nutball" friend that insists that on the day the government goodies stop here in LA, the street riots will start... and they'll be 10 times bigger than the Rodney King riots. I've been ridiculing him for years, always hoping his theory wouldn't be tested. Gotta go, stocking up on water and canned goods now.

Is it still the case that most state employees will be paid only minimum wage beginning on Monday?

Gosh, I hope so. The political fallout from that would be hysterical.

How did we end "Welfare as we know it", the great Clinton victory that all idiot liberals cite when you challenge them on what Bill actually accomplished. Here is a woman who apparently gets $800 a month in govt. money while working at Citibank. Sorry, I just don't get it. Why am I subsidizing her lifestyle. No doubt she has a kid, but that wasn't my choice. I waited until I was 30 to have a child, you know after I had a good job, a career, a house and a wife. So I pay th 9% income tax so Tina and Nazmy can have a nicer life.

How about if we just "end welfare" PERIOD? I don't feel any obligation to help Tina and Nazmy live up to a certain style. If they can't cut it as single moms the state should intervene and put their kids up for adoption, otherwise they should stretch some more.

I wouldn't mind, maybe it would drive down the real-estate market.

The governor is supposed to sign California's $98.9 billion budget by the start of the new fiscal year Monday.
Work with me here, guys.

Our State survived on $59 billion when our Governor was elected. Why not just cut everything proportionally until the budget goes down to that old figure?

Our population hasn't grown by 40%, has it? Inflation isn't up 40%, is it? And last year's budget was, if memory serves, $80 billion.

If we held the line on all increases, we would have an $80 billion budget and a $3 billion deficit, which I would think would be easy to handle through, say, a 4% across the board cut, or bigger cuts in services that are truly unimportant.

Why not just hold the line? What's all that new spending?

So let me get this straight, if the Republicans don't knuckle under, Davis'll stop sending California taxpayers' money to people who didn't earn it.

Gosh, I can see how the GOP feels pressured to make a deal. Not!
