California: Republicans force Anti-SUV bill to be sent to governor
KFI AM640, Los Angeles | July 11, 2002

Posted on 07/11/2002 4:02:12 PM PDT by John Jorsett

Just heard a live interview with Republican Bill Campbell on KFI AM 640 in Los Angeles. He reported that the Republicans in the legislature have forced anti-SUV bill AB1493 to governor Davis' desk. This gives Davis 12 days in which to sign or veto the bill. Democrats in the legislature had been bottling up the already-passed bill in order to head off a potential initiative challenge from opponents. Had they succeeded in delaying passing the bill to Davis until the legislature adjourned, opponents would not have had enough time to gather the 420,000 signatures necessary to get a recission initiative on the November ballot, and would have had to wait until March of 2004. There may still be insufficient time, but this move by Republicans may give opponents enough leeway to mount a successful signature-gathering campaign. Democrats want to keep the initiative off the November ballot because those pushing it are sure to mount a vigorous campaign, and Democrats think that it will damage Davis' chances at reelection, as well as their own electoral prospects.

Great attitude! With that kind of thinking you are likely to do better than you ever thought possible, and be happy at the same time!!

I'm sure that petition circulators would love to enlist your help. If it happens, they're going to have just a few weeks to gather all of the necessary signatures.

I don't even own an SUV and I wish I could go on this.

Maybe they can use a Ford Focus ZX3 as a scout/cavalry vehicle to help screen the Suburban and Excursion main battle tanks and the Tahoe and Expedition personnel carriers...

They get it into their heads, especially in California, that they have some divine right to re-election.

Yep. In fact, on the last ballot they put a measure that would have weakened California's term limits (presently 6 years Assembly, 8 years Senate). Those people get dug in like ticks and are about as hard to remove. They really hate giving up the power. The voters slapped that one down, thank heavens, but they'll keep trying no doubt.

Hope that SUV caravan thing takes hold. I'd love to see this sight on the news.

John and Ken have a real talent for getting press attention. I hope that their caravan results in lots of it; it would be a major embarrassment to Davis and the loons in the legislature.

I wish I could join the convoy of SUVs. I TOTALLY am against this mammoth stealth tax, even though at the moment I can't afford an SUV. But I'd like to get one some day. That's America. You are inspired to GET rich by emulating the people who worked hard and long to get what they have, instead of ENVYING them and thinking it got dropped in their lap.

Dear Lord you are just sooooo right. We need leaders that exemplify and stress this concept. Instead we get class warfare from the Dems; keep down the masses by convincing them they're helpless so that the elite few can rule.

I'm betting you'll get that SUV and be well able to afford it some day. Hell, you'll probably have a fleet of them I'm thinking. Write me back when it happens and tell me I'm right.

If didn't have to work tomorrow, I would go in my little Honda and offer to be the water boy.

I'm in Assembly District 40, my candidate is Connie Friedman, and she doesn't even have a website. She does have e-mail, and I feel like writing her and asking if she's serious about winning.

This is the correct way to think. Back in the 70's when prop 13 was passed I was living in an apartment. Everyone in the apartment house kept saying don't vote for it, it won't help us apartment dwellers. I told them that I was looking to the future when I would own my own house.

Too many people are willing to let jealousy over what someone else has at the moment control their vote and in the process limit their own future.

You should have seen the fire coming out their eyes when we discussed this. These are working women, the gal with the Mercedes does the hair thing as a social thing.

The gal who does my wife's hair recently had their second child. Besides driving them around safely, she as a mother of young ones wants to protect herself. She just upgraded from an Explorer to an Expedition. One of her old maid aunts, a kali liberal was all over her for buying the bigger SUV.

She told her aunt that was it until they went to a bigger SUV when the kids get bigger. If her aunt complained anymore, she was not welcome in her home. They would not visit her either. Her husband drives a Tahoe. They have these SUV's for the safety of their kids and the ability to haul them around. Each SUV has the seats for the new baby and the 3 year old in the second seat attached until they need a larger one.

This is the way a well balanced conservative looks at something that others own from their laborL

You will enjoy your SUV when you can afford to buy it!

I think God that we have younger people like you coming up in America instead of the whining/give me left wingers!

I sure hope Fox is filming the John and Ken train - of course, who else would. Taking my strawberrys to the beach tonight - in the SUV!

Force him off of his safety island and into the path of my Fordasaurus.

I hate SUVs myself, and I happen to drive a Mercedes, a beautiful 1990 420SEL V8. I think SUVs are an aesthetic blight, an offense to good taste everywhere, and they block my vision whenever I want to pass someone who dares to actually (gulp) obey the speed limit on Mulholland Highway!

But my beloved Mercedes gets 13mpg, and that's on a good day. So in terms of this bill, I'm every bit as "guilty" as a SUV-drivin' mom. As a result, I would be pleased to drive in caravan with the SUV-lovers, if it wasn't for the fact that I couldn't get the day off to save my life :-(.

My point? Even those against SUVs should look at what they drive and realize this bill is going to affect anyone who drives a big car - SUV or no.

I'm guessing that the Dems are putting pressure on the Lame Duck Gov to veto this thing. If this goes to Initiative Recision, the Conservatives will come to the polls in Droves come November. Rush has been reporting that 47% of Californians drive SUVs or light trucks! California is still Reagan Country but they've been sittin' on their hand ever since Gov Wilson raised taxes during a recession! Go Simon- don't wimp out now!
