For those who live elsewhere: The greater Los Angeles area is home to the national U.S. HQ of several leading auto manufacturers, including Toyota, Nissan and Honda, among others. (I work at Nissan national HQ.) The Ports of Los Angeles and San Francisco are among the leading ports of entry for imported vehicles into the U.S. Between the manufacturers, dealerships, vehicle transportation companies, and other support industries, the auto industry is one of the leading employers in California.

The bill Davis just signed has the potential to essentially kill the auto industry in this state. It gives sweeping, virtually carte blanche, regulatory powers to the Air Resources Board, which has already proposed a 2-cents-a-mile tax per year on every motorist, and huge surcharges on SUV's and other larger passenger vehicles. The 2-cents-a-miles would be assessed when we go get our smog check, and would be based on the odometer reading. The potential damage to the state's economy cannot be overstated. And such a tax would hit lower-income people the hardest (Dems always claim they are for the little people, but never live up to that claim). By the way, notice that this law does not take effect until Jan. 1006, when a 2nd Davis term will be up. The Dems are also gutless wonders. But as always, the news media have done a sterling job of covering up for Davis and the Dems on the impact of this incredibly important bill.

And by the way, all you Simon apologists out there: he has been NOWHERE TO BE FOUND on this bill. So far in this campaign, he has shown ZERO leadership, ZERO guts, and ZERO understanding of what it takes to be elected. If he wins, and that's a very big if, it will be by sheer blind luck, not because he did anything to earn anyone's vote.

Thanks for the info, I wondered how this would be assessed.

This measure and how it was passed disgusts me. Simon should come out swinging, informing the sheeple of the impact this bill will have and the clandestine way in which it was passed. Is there anyone in the Repbulican party with a backbone and cajones to speak out????

Forgive me, everyone, for the typos in my Post #23. I was at work and had to post it quickly. Correction: 1006 should be 2006. Davis made sure this bill would take effect at the conclusion of his 2nd term, should he win reelection. The Dems who infest our legislature also made sure they didn't have to make the really nasty decisions, because the bill (now a law) basically gives carte blanche to the Air Resources Board, which will make all the detailed decisions. That Board, of course, is packed with Davis and hard-Left cronies.

As for the question of whether or not there are any Republicans with cajones, the answer is 'yes.' But Simon has not shown himself to be one of them, in my opinion. In addition, Republicans simply do not have any power in our legislature, which is very heavily populated (infested) with hard-Left Dems.
