How's this:
For all practical purposes you have to burn something to produce that electricity stored in those batteries.
I have lived "off the grid." I know all about solar and wind. I wish the technology were truly available, but the reality of it is that it's not. Do you have any idea how many solar panels it would take to get enough power to get the average commuter to and from work every day?
You forgot nuclear, which doesn't produce greenhouse gases. Oh, wait, this is California, so nuclear is right out . . .
The economics of small scale power generation for living off grid make it impractical for anyone but the hobbiest. Large scale wind is growing at about 5 gw of installed power per year and the cost is right there with coal, nuclear and natural gas fired plants given the PTC.
It's still interesting to me that you lived off grid though. I think that makes you Rush's mortal enemy. ;-D
But there certainly are a lot of levels of emission reduction from full sized SUV to get 1 person to work to a solar panel charged electric car that are pretty easy to accomplish.
