One type is hands-on, involved in every single detail, and generally works himself to death - and fails - when put in an important position with diverse responsibilities. I'll give you an example of this kind of leader: Gray Davis. And I'll give you another: Bill Clinton. This kind of leader tends to worry too much about details while losing sight of the big picture.
Another kind is hands off, delegates like mad, and only gets involved in the truly important issues. This type of leader tends to be an imaginative and creative guy who comes up with new perspectives. I'll give you an example of this kind of leader: George W Bush. And another one: Ronald Reagan. This kind of leader tends to worry not at all about details, but always keeps his eye on the ball and the big picture.
I would submit that California is such a big and complex state that only the second kind of leader could govern it successfully. And I will give you another example of that kind of leader: Bill Simon.
