Gov. Gray Davis' record-breaking effort to secure campaign cash has been aided by a network of people he has appointed to state boards and commissions, some of whom raise money from businesses and individuals they regulate.

A Bee analysis of campaign contributions and the activities of about 100 Davis appointees to state panels found more than a dozen who have sponsored or organized campaign fund-raisers for the Democratic governor.

If the Sac Bee thinks this is something that only afflicts Davis they are sadly mistaken... It happens in every state...

It happens in every state...

I'm still surprised. It's so clear a conflict of interest that I'm astounded that it hasn't been made illegal.

All must pay respect to Don Davis. Its just business as usual.

It'a odd that the Bee would notice and put it in print.

Earlier this year, when Davis learned that one of his top technology aides, Arun Baheti, had accepted a $25,000 campaign check from a lobbyist for Oracle Corp., Baheti was fired.

Wrong...After it was disclosed by a bay area newspaper, he claimed ignorance and canned to patsy.

Do you know anybody personally who has ever applied to be a member on a commission or board?

I know someone who was appointed to the local sewer task force. Before she was appointed, the representative of the mayor told her what conclusion the mayor wanted the task force to arrive at, and asked if she had any problem with that. Apparently, she didn't. I sure would have.

I don't know anyone at the state level.

If this type of reporting is being published by McClatchy maybe Simon does have a chance.

I have never, in 40 years, seen McClatchy publish such accusitory information about a Democratic politician before an indictment.

Even Jesse Unruh and Alan Cranston were treated as gods by this Democratic rag until their fall from grace was official.

I think people everywhere have had a bellyfull of Davis. The man is the Perfect Storm of incompetence, avarice, venality, and indecision. His case is similar to the Republican's desertion of state Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush. Even conservatives couldn't stomach how he conducted himself in office. Democrats must be feeling about the same toward Davis these days.

"* Doug Bosco, a member of Congress from 1982 to 1990. Like Dombrowski, he is a Davis appointee to the Industrial Welfare Commission. He said he has held "about 10" fund-raisers for Davis.

In an example some Davis critics say illustrates how the governor's appointees guard the interests of big campaign contributors, Bosco's former law partner and a former congressional aide were appointed by Davis to the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board, where they helped block timber cleanup regulations opposed by Pacific Lumber. "

Bosco was involved in the Oracale debacle and resigned his role. I thought he was in the dust bin of 'rats caught in the act. He was our state senator on the North Coast and his father in law was in the timber business.

A friend of mine was to serve on the Water Quality Board until some group railed against his former business contacts with Pacific Lumber and he said he retired to enjoy life. He just told Doofus to forget it. He is a staunch Repub and I wondered why he even considered.

North state landowners say a regional water board has been stacked against them because a Davis fund-raiser has ties to timber interests.

That is covered in this article:

Water board is focus of fight
