[history]
IN AN atmosphere of horror and anger, Spanish voters managed to sort through their emotions over the weekend to deliver a surprisingly clear message to their government. Perhaps we should listen in the United States. Governments that lie and cover up on matters not only central to national security but also to the commitment of armed forces abroad are inviting rejection.

Thomas Oliphant corkscrew writer.

Thomas Oliphant is a misanthropic liberal. No wonder he's rubbing his hands in glee at what he thinks is Bush's impending downfall - the President's hubris.

So this rocket scientist author thinks that the Spanish people, angry at an Al Qaeda attack, become more angry at their own government and deliver a message by rewarding Al Qaeda? Thereby guaranteeing more terrorist attacks?
Uh, okay. Yeah, we here in the U.S. need to take heed... and not make that mistake!

It's obvious that the lamestream media has no qualms about using events as unspeakable as mass murder for political purposes.

Whenever I see Oliphant on a TV talk show, I'm always amazed that his looks match his writing.
He looks like a wimp, he writes like a wimp!

The March 11 attack opened a gaping hole in Europe's flank. The EU is holding an emergency meeting and they are considering creating the Euro equivalent of Homeland Defense, costing roughly the same. This means they seriously fear more attacks -- whatever the Spanish Socialists claim. This puts Zapatero in a bind. If he actually puts the crimp on the AQ, they will attack again and he will be no better than Aznar. If he does nothing the jihadis will walk all over him. He is now in the position of having to fight Osama without angering him whereas Aznar would fight regardless of the consequences. I'm glad Oliphant thinks Zapatero is smart.

Completely pathetic.
What the Spanish Socialist party did was exactly what the Dems do by chanting "Bush lied." (About what?) There was every indication at the time of the bombings that they were ETA bombings (particularly since ETA had already tried to carry out an identical train bombing around Christmas), and only a few hours later, the Aznar government began releasing other information, as it was found, indicating the involvement of Islamic terrorists. No attempt was made to "cover it up," but this has become the mantra of the left.
And ETA still may be involved. Today it was revealed that the blasting caps were manufactured by a company in the Basque region, and an arrest was made of an Algerian who lived in San Sebastian and has criminal and terrorist connections. In January, while he was being arrested for his part in a drug dealing ring, he made threats about killing hundreds of people in Madrid. Since ETA strictly controls all activities in Pais Vasco, it's hard to imagine that other terrorist groups could have operated there without ETA involvement. The investigation is still going on.
But fact doesn't matter to leftists. They got the hysteria they needed out of their "Aznar lied" charges, and that was all they wanted. The terrorists would never have won in Spain without the help of the political left, and I think this is a lesson for us here in the US.

"Worse, the administration used the Madrid bombings in this country as a fresh justification for its partisan exploitation of terrorism." No, the partisan is the Globe. 'Bend over..., take what Al Qeada gives you and hug them for it'
"The Spanish lesson is that fighting Al Qaeda has clearly been undercut by the preoccupation with Iraq"
Yeah, right. Al Qaeda attacked Spain for not paying attention to them. You know how those pre-schoolers can get.

madison46 says: "Yeah, right. Al Qaeda attacked Spain for not paying attention to them."
Excellent summary of the idiotic logic of the Left, once the excess verbiage of this Globe article is stripped away.

A Kerry victory in November is a victory for the Islamists. That's a fact.
