Hawaii's 1.25 million population completed a total of 1.23 million calls in their two hour voting period (6 hours behind East Coast Time) a large portion which were for Jasmine Trias says Kevin Laverty of Verizon Wireless.
That's 24,000 more than New Jersey which has seven times the population. Overall, Hawaii logged more calls than all of Verizon's 29 coverage states except New York and California in the post-Idol hours.
Though the island votes helped Jasmine Trias, they make up a portion of a national total that may top 25 million. Other theories abound about how the vote veered so wildly from the consensus of judges and qualified observers.
Many AI Folowers believe children and teens, who are more likely to be passionate and prolific voters, lean towards their own age group, which includes Diana DeGarmo and Trias.
Some fans appearing to be casting votes against caustic judge Simon Cowell. When Cowell ripped John Stevens, voters kept him. On Tuesday, Cowell told Trias everyone in Hawaii would need five phones to save her.
The question of racism: Much the same as when black women Fantasia Barrino, LaToya London, and Jennifer Hudson were in the bottom three, some fans wonder whether color is affecting votes.

Agreed, Fantasia's rendition of 'Summertime' on the Broadway/movie show was the best performance of the competition so far.
Nope, Jasmine sucks, I can't believe she is still in there. I think next year we should be able to vote for who we want OFF the show.
There's a reason why it's called the boob tube.
No way she beats Fantasia though.
Yeah, but no way should Jasmine have upset Latoya London this week. She was the talent, class act of the whole show.

it won't matter. She'll get the Mariah Carey treatment.
Digarmo will win now. She's coming on strong. Fantasia is the best stage performer, but she has a voice, like Macy Gray, that irritates some. Jasmine can't hang. That's my 2 cents worth.
a little fingernails on a chalkboard...
Fantasia grates on my nerves like fingernails on a chalkboard. Every week, they gush over her. And Tuesday night, the judges hammered Latoya after a great first performance, while of course just gushing over Fantasia as they have all season. Then after the second song, they showed mild disappointment with Fantasia and pleasure with Latoya, but even then, their praise of her was infinitely briefer and more subdued than what they typically lay out for Fantasia.
Then during the results, when Latoya was revealed as the loser, their behavior was IMO despicable. Getting very very sick of it all. Bottom line is I predicted months ago that they'd push Fantasia to a win, and that looks right on target.
MM
no not just you :) I got it too.
Seriously, though.
1) London was too good- too mature, too polished, too seaonsed, too composed. I'd buy her albums, I'd go to her concerts- but I doubt a 13-year old would.
2) Trias is a cutie (the previously mentioned 13-year olds like her)- but she needs serious training. She couldn't dance and sing without getting out of breath, forcryingoutloud.
3) No one cried foul when Rogers, LaBelle, Lewis, Adams, and Stevens were voted off. The white kids were some of the first to go!
I predict Simon will back off his mean comments next week and Jasmine will be gone.
The kicker is, that after Stevens was voted off, everyone reamining is a minority- even De Garmo. So now, everyone who gets voted off is a minority. Truly racist!
Diana DeGarmo is coming in 'under the radar' improving every week and really blossoming, she may be able to upset Fanstasia Barrino in a final matchup..and then listen to the liberals start to whine!
I felt like voting for Jasmine when she cried. She wasn't my favorite singer, but she was so sweet, and it was painful to see her cry. Truth is, I didn't vote. I thought LaToya was the best singer, so I was shocked when she received the fewest votes. But I am here to say that I didn't vote. It's as much about what type of person will dial the phone for two hours straight, and who they are likely to vote for, as it is about overall talent. People my age don't call. People my age want the mature voice, the beautiful tone, and the exacting inflections of a LaToya. But younger age groups -- THOSE MOST LIKELY TO DIAL THE PHONE FOR TWO HOURS -- are not going to pick a LaToya. They are not looking for the same things at all. They will not share the opinions of Simon, Donna, Elton, and the rest. THEY ARE OLD THEMSELVES.
I always vote for the best looking white chick
/sarcasm
She's a dear, too. I'm rooting for her now that Stevens is gone. That bubbly little "Come on y'all!" she does to get people clapping is adorable. I've been impressed with her progress, too. She doesn't sound like a girl who just learned to drive.
The results will never satisfy some.
