That was my experience as well. Had a couple of Turks as fellow grad students. Loyal, proud, decent people. Don't forget that the US was allowed to park IRBMs there in the early days of the Cold War, and that they fought beside us in Korea.

Turkey is the future of Islam, and that thought just drives the fundies nuts.

The three Turks look odd in the video... like perhaps they have been drugged.... The one on the left is shaking and/or jerking around like he has some kind of tremors. Did anyone else think they looked odd/drugged??

They drugged Paul Johnson before killing him. I suspect they are drugging all of these hostages before beheading them. May account for the limited/lack of struggling on the part of the hostage, and may account for the lack of blood spurting that should accompany an adult human with normal blood pressure. Forensic blood spatter analyist commented that blood splatter patterns were not consistent with normal blood pressure (implying either near death, or already dead when beheading took place).

I used to think these fools might have a shred of intelligence. I was wrong. WAY wrong. Can anyone say death wish? What complete morons to mess with the Turks.

First of all, prayers for the Turks, but they are more than likely dead already. Second, let's hope Turkey has a response on the table to be launched as quickly as the beheading videos show up on the web.

They may want the Turks to move on the Iraqi Kurds.

And beheading Turks will do that? Not very smart because instead of fostering hatred against the Kurds, they will ony further foster resolve to get rid of terrorists- regardless of religion.

Lets just hope the response from the Turk populace is not against GW, Blair and others at the NATO summit. The Turk military and the guy on the street are ideologically 180 degrees apart.

Sort of off topic, but did anyone see the movie, 'The Chronicles of Riddick'? I did, and I swear the planet that the Necromongers took over was Islamic. I thought for sure I heard a character speak of Islam. Anyway, these people were 'forced' to convert to belief in the Underverse. When one refused, he was killed, and the rest willingly converted to save their skins.

Not as long as they bow 5 times a day to the Arabs. Turkey can't be the future of Islam because Mohammed and all his values were Arab and Islam is about Arab nationalism and racism.

Turkey would have been snapped up by USSR if we had not put those weapons there. We were defending them. With the Soviet threat gone they stuck us in the back last year in an attempt to curry favor with Germany and France, part of their EU attempt.

Turkey sent one brigade to Korea in their effort to buy their way into NATO, the same way they flipped in 1945 to get on the good side with the Allies and the fledgling UN. All during WW2 Turkey was Hitler's number trading partner, in spite of the please to sesist from Washington and London. The raw materiel they provided the Nazis cost untold thousands of Allied deaths. It was announced that only countries that had declared war on the Axis would be considered for entry to the UN as charter members. Turkey waited until the war was nearly over, January 1945, then they declared war on Germany.

This is the modern history of turkey.

"He would have seethed but have not shown it..."

A personal trait I wish was shared by more people, myself included.

I applaud the patience and forbearance you two have shown in this thread.

My kindest thoughts and feelings go to the friends and family of the poor unfortunates, and I pray for their rescue, release, or escape.

I'd be delighted to saw off Zarqawi's head, with full Koranic decorum.

And many here on Fr would support you.

Educate yourself about my country, and my people, and our history and political situation first; and then you can judge us.

They are reporting huge demonstrations now against Bush coming. At least one Wahabi militant was known to be hiding out successfully in Turkey and when Russia wanted him, Turkey refused to hand him over.

Not once have I spent a solitary bad word about Jesus or christianity, not that I am incapable.

And I can testify here that you have been very tolerant and loving toward my Christian faith as well.

People here don't mean to hurt you, you know. It is hard sometimes to post and remember to only be talking about the Wahabi scum in your post. And also, recall that we have seen some supposedly "nice" muslims who turned out to be terrorists masquerading as "nice" muslims, quite a few times, in this country. We need a way to know the good guys from the bad ones.

See my quote from Putin on my FR webpage.

Never mind - looks like things have changed since I read about him last.

link.

"Indeed, Kommersant yesterday quoted anonymous Chechen politicians as saying that Udugov had already left Turkey and that Ankara had simply promised to extradite him simply as a way to show its support for the fight against international terrorism (Kommersant, January 10)."

>> People here don't mean to hurt you, you know.

And they can't. I am not concerned about my state of mind.

Everytime ugly sentiments are shared we run the risk of deepening the crisis by widening the gap. We run the risk of drawing sentiments of retribution out of the multitudes of simple minds around us.

Finally, we cannot know whether someone is good or bad until too late, or hopefully almost so. Therefore we as individuals must treat each other with relative kindness and consideration by default until an assessment can be made.

I am not asking for anyone to keep turning the other cheek, but simply to avoid throwing the baby out with the bath-water...
