THE Russian plane that went missing around the time as another jet crashed issued a signal indicating a hijacking or seizure before disappearing from radar, the Interfax news agency has reported.The signal came at 11:04 pm yesterday (0404 AEST today) from the Tu-154 airliner that went missing in southern Russia's Rostov region, Interfax quoted a source in Russia's "power structures" as saying.
Emergency workers were still searching for the plane hours after it disappeared from radar screens on a flight from Moscow to the Black Sea resort city of Sochi.
The source said the signal was activated shortly before the plane disappeared.
Another passenger jet that went missing at about the same time crashed in the Tula region south of Moscow. There was no word on survivors among the 89 people believed to be aboard the two planes.
Wonder if this was the major assassination (in this case attempted on Putin ?) that the UBL tape spoke of ?

Prayers are being sent up for all the families involved and for the whole country of Russia right now. Waking up to this must be terrible. We do have some idea what that's like. Hang in there and keep us informed.

Could still be Chechnyans... everybody got a lesson already on the multiple plane scenario... it's not limited to AQ anymore. But of course, it could be almost anybody. It's becoming increasingly counter-productive to make distinctions between subtle flavors of Islamofacists. They should be viewed monolithically.
Actuallt it's not 7700. There isa special code for hijackig as opposed to 7700 which is a general mayday transponder squawk.

I was also curious. With the small number of passengers listed as dead I wondered if this wasn't a small enough plane that it did not have a cockpit door. I was wrong. What is the range of the planes that went down? In other words, what is the range of possible targets that the hijackers intended?

You mean like a flight, ostensibly canceled--as far as passengers are concerned (possibly months in advance)--but the packed-with-explosives (viz. Black Sunday), properly-numbered flight leaves Riyadh as usual, behaves normally (flight path, radio calls), almost all the way to IAD?

A missile site near the State Department takes him out, only seconds before he would've slammed into the White House, though it rains secondaries all over Georgetown.
That's where we realize it was also the worse outcome fulfillment of the "Executive Decision" plot. 5000 die, 20,000 are sick and injured. Billions in damage. Plenty of residual terror.
