Democrats signing up more new voters in key US states
NEW YORK (AFP) - Democrats have far outpaced Republicans in efforts to register new voters in two key US states, according to the New York Times, which conducted a county-by-county analysis of registration data in Ohio and Florida. This grass-roots accomplishment could clinch the presidential race if the effort bears out nationwide and if the new voters go to the polls on November 2.
Each side has devoted millions of dollars and huge numbers of workers to voter registration, and both say record numbers of voters are signing up nationwide.
"We have a ground game that's as good as the Democrats, and better," Republican National Committee spokeswoman Christine Iverson told the paper.
But the Times, which compared registration data from January through July 2004 to the same period four years earlier, found new registration up 250 per cent in heavily Democratic areas of Ohio, compared to 25 per cent in Republican strongholds.
In Florida, where Al Gore lost to George W. Bush by a mere 537 votes after a recount battle was halted by the US Supreme Court, the Times examined voter rolls in 60 of 67 counties.
It found new registration up 60 per cent in strongly Democratic areas and just 12 per cent in strongly Republican ones.
In heavily black, mostly Democratic Duval County, where thousands of ambiguously marked ballots were discarded in 2000, new registration was up 150 per cent. The registration drives are being conducted by community and political groups that have a clear party affiliation but cannot coordinate their activities with the Bush or Kerry campaigns under US campaign finance laws.
America Votes, a pro-Democrat umbrella group, said its affiliates would spend US$300 million on voter registration and turnout in swing states.
Ironic, isn't it, that this election is so colse to Halloween - The Dead Vote is very conveniently active anyway...
This is simply a comparision between two 6-month periods. It does not include new Republicans after 9/11 that had already registered long before January.

Maybe that is why these "fact" are not posted in American papers. Everything that I have seen has the new voter sign up dead even at best.

If the (r's) were smart, they would tell their people to contact the Dem machine for registration, and eat up their resources.

Are the Dems going to pick up these registered voters, take them to the voting booths, and return them to their homes (with a $20 Soros "thank you")?
These were pretty useless stats without seeing the underlying numbers. It says "new registration" is up, not just registration. So it's only the number of new voters, which may be a very small segment of the whole.
More importantly, it is comparing the change in new regsitration for dems v. republicans, not the number of new registrations for dems v. republicans. In real terms, the republicans may have registrated more new votes, but the increase isn't as great as a percentage.

Implied assumptions. The assumption implied is that the total number of rat registrations is outpacing the total number republican registrations. The problem with only citing increased %'s is that it assumes the comparison year was even.
We don't know if 4 years ago the republicans had been far outstripping the rats in terms of registering and that a 12% increase demonstrates a larger total than a 60% increase. For example, if the rats only registered 5 people 4 years ago and this year registered 8 then thats a 60% increase and if the republicans registered 100 last year and this year 112 thats only a 12% increase.
We also don't know what party the voters are being registered in, in the "traditional" rat areas. The implication is that they are rats. How do we know ?
without this data, the entire article may be based on poor assumption. It makes me wonder how awful an understanding of math the average journalist has.

My personal opinion is this whole campaign to go out and get people to register to vote is a wasted effort. People who are not motivated enough to go out and register to vote are going to show up at the polls. I'm not saying we shouldn't do it, but I think the Dems are playing this card a little too much.
