The Kerry campaign complains and CBS News jumps in line to castigate Republicans.
"The Kerry campaign is accusing the Republican National Committee today of hitting below the belt in the Bible Belt," Dan Rather intoned on Friday's CBS Evening News in introducing a full story devoted to a campaign flyer with the word "Banned" over a Bible. John Roberts asserted that "the claims are dramatic and alarmist: A Kerry White House would ban the Bible and undermine the moral fabric of America by appointing 'activist judges' who would legalize 'same-sex marriage.' That's the message in flyers targeting Christian conservatives in Arkansas and West Virginia." Roberts relayed how "they were mailed out by the Republican National Committee, part of a voter registration drive -- and nothing but a Republican dirty trick, according to John Kerry's running mate." Roberts lamented that "the flyers exploit a proven political tactic: It's not necessarily about what's true, it's about what people believe might be possible."
Rather set up the September 24 CBS Evening News story: "The Kerry campaign is accusing the Republican National Committee today of hitting below the belt in the Bible Belt. CBS News chief White House correspondent John Roberts reports on a get-out-the-vote flyer that's meant to motivate some core Republicans."
Roberts, over shots of the flyer, with "BANNED" over a Bible: "The claims are dramatic and alarmist: A Kerry White House would ban the Bible and undermine the moral fabric of America by appointing 'activist judges' who would legalize 'same-sex marriage.' That's the message in flyers targeting Christian conservatives in Arkansas and West Virginia. They were mailed out by the Republican National Committee, part of a voter registration drive -- and nothing but a Republican dirty trick, according to John Kerry's running mate." John Edwards: "I think what the Republicans and George Bush are doing in West Virginia and Arkansas is an outrage. I mean, to scare people, and to scare them about something they know is an absolute lie." Roberts continued, as taken down by the MRC's Brad Wilmouth: "Republicans stood by the mailings in a statement proclaiming, 'When the Massachusetts Supreme Court sanctioned same-sex marriage, it became an issue. These same activist judges also want to remove the words 'under God' from the Pledge of Allegiance.' Through a spokesman, President Bush said he hadn't seen the flyer and never suggested Kerry wants to ban the Bible. But the attack on activist judges certainly mirrors the President's platform." George W. Bush on Thursday: "I stand for the appointment of federal judges who know the difference between personal opinion and the strict interpretation of the law." Roberts: "The Bush campaign is eager to avoid a repeat of the 2000 election when four million conservative Christians stayed home. The flyers warn that liberals are counting on Christians not to vote this year so they could impose their agenda -- a powerful motivator, say Republican strategists. The flyers exploit a proven political tactic: It's not necessarily about what's true, it's about what people believe might be possible. And, say strategists, nothing motivates the religious right to vote like feeling threatened. John Roberts, CBS News, Racine, Wisconsin."
Why is Dan Rather still employed at cBS "News"?
Perhaps Mr. Roberts should "analyze" Dem assertions about the "secret draft plans."
DUH - Hey Dan, how about doing a story on Kerry's phony
"draft" fear tactics. Unbelievable horse's @ss....
Like Kerry has a chance with these voters anyways.
The question is, Why is CBS news still employed by the DNC ?
What I see going on with some of these old Democrat icons is senility...Cronkite, Rather, Mandela, Carter.
Or maybe they were this way all along and we just didn't notice? They are all coming out with some very extreme statements these days!
What about Kerry "hitting below the belt" with his fear-mongering about the draft?
Isn't that the DNC Infomercial Channel?
But no, he wouldn't actually ban the Bible. No sir.
I'm sure all us evengelicals in the Bible belt will relax and vote for him when that little nuance is explained to us.
These guys are so biased and so despirate to try to see to it that Kerry gets elected that they will sacrafice everything.
Maybe it is time that Freepers wrote letters to the "independent investigation" group explaining all of the historic Dan Rather bias and the current Dan Rather/CBS News bias and let the "independent investigation team" just see the totality of MSM media bias at CBS.
OH, BLATHER!!!!!
did Rather cover the Democrat claim that Bush will reinstatethe draft, which they are passing through the internet towards college students?
The Kerry campaign does nothing but REACT to Bush's ads. Bush asserts, Kerry (and Rather squeals. But Kerry asserts nothing of his own!
Surely, any student of rhetoric could recognize this weak stategy. Kerry plays defense, and defense only.
Actually, it would not surprise me to see this on a pro-Kerry handout.
HEY DAN!!!

You have no credibility. You have no conscience. You have no RIGHT to be employed as a journalist. You have NO mount to preach from. You are a running joke and will continue to be until we forget, and you KNOW what they say about elephants.

Dan Rather and CBS News are a perfect fit, like a couple of turds hugging each other as they swirl around the toilet bowl, faster and faster....
Yes, and Dan Rather and CBS would certainly know about that, wouldn't they. Sort of like putting out forged documents?
