'I yam what I yam'

If you want to see a photograph of John Kerry, you're more likely to find one on a milk carton than in your daily newspaper. After his gracious concession speech on the morning after, he disappeared. To the winner goes the spoils of victory. The loser gets media obscurity.

The senator says he's assessing the "feasibility" of another run in 2008, but nobody is paying attention. The names bandied about by the scribes and Pharisees a week after the election include Howard Dean, Evan Bayh, Barack Obama, Bill Richardson and John Edwards as "some Democrats to keep an eye on." And of course Hillary Clinton. She's in a category by herself.

With 20/20 hindsight, it's clear that John Kerry was the wrong candidate at the wrong time from the wrong place. (Massachusetts is the poisoned well of American politics.)

[snip]

Everyone could see how passionately the president wanted to be re-elected, but we also knew that if he lost he could enjoy life in Texas after Washington. John Kerry, by contrast, seems to have everything a man could want in the way of money, status and elegant houses, but can anyone believe he will enjoy returning to his old life in the Senate? He wasn't a distinguished senator and the Senate was merely a station on the way to somewhere else. The presidency was to be the end of the line. Now what?

I hope Evan Bayh doesn't get the nomination. He's the only one I'd truly worry about.

The only one remotely dangerous out of that group is Evan Bayh and the public doesn't know who he is.

Good looking senator from Indiana. Called a moderate, but has a lifetime rating of 22 from the american conservative union. Basically, he sounds like Rush at home, and votes like Ted Kennedy in Washington.

Indiana (D) Senator. Being from Indiana, he's conservative (for a Dem, but he's no Zell Miller by any stretch of the imagination). He'd have a shot at winning Indiana, Ohio, and probably a few other states that usually go Republican. That's why I'd be concerned about him.

Senator from Indiana. Famous political family in that state. Fairly middle-of-road type, for a 'Rat, but WILL NOT answer a straight question straightly. Was on FOX Tuesday night, bobbing and weaving all over the place.

True enough. Probably a straight-enough shooter, but he's Daschle-lite: down-home AT home, quasi-Marxist in D.C.

Indianans aren't stupid, they'll figure him out sooner or later.

I am from Indiana and Evan Bayh did get elected on his dad's name. They ran a nobody against him, at least we had never heard of him, and he won by a large margin. The energy in the state went to getting Mitch Daniels elected govenor. I agree he is a two-faced, pretty boy. I don't know of anything he's done for the state. But Rush felt he wouldn't make it, being from flyover country.

What they mean by "keep an eye on" is they may be out of sight before long.
