Arizona Sen. John McCain said Sunday that while he has no current plans to make a run for the White House in 2008, he would not rule it out.
"I do not foreclose the option," he told NBC's "Meet the Press."
"There will be plenty of time to consider whether to run for president again," the Arizona Republican said. "But certainly I don't think it's in any way appropriate for me to speculate on that at this time." McCain, who will by 72 in four years, said he didn't expect his age to be a major obstacle to a prospective presidential run.
"I have a wonderful mother who is 92," he told NBC. "Maybe I could use her as an example."
A recent Gallup poll of possible GOP presidential candidates shows McCain tied for the lead with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, with each garnering ten percent support.
In a head-to-head match-up with expected Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, McCain would win 53 to 37 percent, according to a Fox News Dynamics Poll.
The media-friendly Republican said he'd decide whether to make the run by 2006.
What really peaves me is that he claims that he is a "reagan conservative" - but knifed Bush in the back so many times that it hurts.
I too have mixed feelings about McCain. He can be very annoying, but McCain is no RINO. Schwarzenegger is a RINO. Giuliani is a RINO. Pataki is a RINO. When the time comes and the choice is between McCain and someone like Giuliani, I think the GOP will choose McCain. The big question is, will conservatives lead the charge, or make a differeent choice? Right now, were still two years away from the real start of the 2008 presidential race. A lot can happen in two years.
Good examples. Mccain would be a disaster for the party and for the country.
I wish people would come to their senses on the social issues. Gay marriage ain't gonna happen no matter how the prez feels about it and RvW ain't going anywhere either.
Rudy is conservative where it counts. He is security minded and he's not afraid to tell his opposition where to stuff it when he has to. Regardless of his stance on social issues, he's a tough-as-nails Republican.
Imagine if McCain got us into Kyoto. Can you just imagine that? I'll take Rudy over McCain any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Probably already been said, but his health is a major issue - expect the press to hype him for the nomination, then turn on him like a bunch of jackals.
Gray Davis was booted out by us CALIFORNIANS on just single issue, DRIVER LICENSES for ILLEGAL ALIENS.
Poll after poll shows more than 75% of American people want the ILLEGAL ALIENS be kicked out.
Arizona's Prop. 200, opposed by both REPUBLICAN and DEMOCRAT congressmen of ARIZONA, both SENATORS of ARIZONA, the CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, opposed by WALL STREET JOURNAL, and it still passed. Also, the supporters of Prop. 200 were outspent by the opponents by 150 to 1.
In the end, PRINCIPLES do matter.
Yeah that's exactly right. The only difference is that ONCE Mcain was Conservative Hero. He got upset when after 8 years of Klinton, Conservatives got behind 'W'. Now he has four years to heal the bonds between him and his base.
Media has raised him to a status where it difficult for even them to destroy him. Yes, I know their motitvation was to harm Pubbies, but now that they created this 'Popular Monster', we should take advantage of it.
He can flip WI, WA, MI, PA, and even MN for us.
He would definitely stop Hitlary.
So I hope like a 'Democrap trying to find religion', Mcain finds his Conservative roots and wins.
That is not quite true. There is a man (former football player IIRC) that she's been romantically linked to in the past, with whom Condi has attended State dinners. My sense is that she is driven and devoted to her work. I don't believe that she is gay, if that is what you are suggesting.
"He can flip WI, WA, MI, PA, and even MN for us."
..and he will quickly sell out our country on KYOTO, IMMIGRATION,.........
Campaign Finance Reform was, IMHO, the most unconstitutional law to be passed by Congress and signed by the President since the early days of FDR. Bush wrongly assumed that it would be overturned by the SCOTUS, but after many of their recent rulings, that was a very unwise gamble. McCain is anti-abortion and very pro-military. He stood firmly behind Bush this summer and fall, I wonder if there was some quid pro quo involved.
McCain v Rudy would be an interesting choice. The democrat party wouldn't stand much of a chance. However, some of their ideas would be carried into office by the GOP winner.
WHO???
I don't believe for a second that Rice is gay. I think she is very devoted to her work, and marriage just isn't a big priority for her. But after what I saw from the press last week, I have a pretty good idea how the leftist press will portray Rice's personal life.
I got mixed feelings to. He really sucks, He really really sucks
He stood firmly behind Bush this summer and fall,
Ummm NO he didn't. If you actually listen to McCain it was often hard to figure out if he was campaigning for Kerry or for Bush. McCain raised the politcal art of damning with faint praise to new level this summer and fall. The Republican base will not forget. Both he and Hagel have ended their hopes for any future in the Republican party beyond their current office. Their rabid disloyalty to the party will neither be forgotten no forgiven
don't believe that she is gay, if that is what you are suggesting.
If she was the only people who would care ARE the establishment press.
Yeah, that's what they said about 'W' before his first term... he would appoint pro-abortion judges, he would not cut enough taxes, he would have open border policy with Mexico, etc.
Mcain is NOT going to SELL this Country.... He was willing to gladly die for it once and he would do it again...
The CFR legislation that passed into law was the most unconstitutional piece of trash since the USSC`s decision in RoevWade legalizing abortion. I wouldn't rule SenMcCain out the 2008 equation right now. He stood firm with PresBush in the camapign. Karl Rove could do a lot for a McCain Presidential candidacy.
Ahhhh, I see what you mean now. Well, time will tell. I wouldn't think it would be possible to top the "Aunt Jemima" and "mammy" slurs, but then the libs always seem to outdo themselves, don't they?
You got a 50% anyway...
