BRUSSELS, Belgium - President Bush sought to repair rocky relations with Europe, opening a visit Sunday to soothe allies embittered by the U.S.-led Iraq (news - web sites) war and frustrated that their views were often ignored by the White House.
Hoping to set a more conciliatory tone for his second term, Bush will meet over five days with some of his toughest critics: French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, both of whom fiercely opposed the U.S. led invasion.
Bush also will see Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has alarmed the West with Moscow's retreat from democracy.
The president and his wife, Laura, arrived at night on Air Force One.
I'm not to confident that we can change the EU's, especially the Toad's direction.. I don't know, it looks like Germany and France have already picked sides.. Russia is playing all sides at the moment..though they must be quite concerned about China... W's meeting with Putin could be very important.
I'm not sure the Belgian taxpayers have paid us in full for this visit:
Speech beginning in Europe..
Not yet....not yet....not yet....
Who is that windbag introducing the Pres.?
I loved him reading the Observer piece describing the praise and esteem held for Benjamin Franklin in Europe, saying he was hoping for such a reception but Condi told him to be realistic..big laugh.
Thanks for the heads up. Please keep me informed, I am cubicle bound this a.m.

BUSH: LET'S START AGAIN (Live Thread - President Bush's European Speech)
Good Speech!!
Tks :o)
I am now in Bratislava, where there was a pretty big snow today.
I think I will stay the week and see what happens here.
It is funny, a guy from Tennessee, may get to see our president only in Slovakia.
I have seen only one president, that was Johnson, when I was a student at Univ. of TN in 64
Great for you AlexW. I hope that the snow does not hinder you much. Take pictures.
"Great for you AlexW. I hope that the snow does not hinder you much. Take pictures"
I will try, but I do not expect much.
I think the activity is at Bratislava Castle, just above old town Bratislava.
It was funny to see some entertainment group setting up a stage in the snow today...maybe not even related to the big doings..
I have been in Serbia, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovakia for the last month, and the snow seems to follow me.
Anyway, I guess I can be the FR guy in Bratislava this week....Quick, send me some papers, hahaha
"Fence-mending?" - who gave this tour that name?
NOT PresBush.
"Conciliatory?" - W sure didn't look conciliatory from what I saw of him last night.
This is the media's spin, and unfortunately this is the image the public will keep - GWB crawling to EU for his deserved chastisement after being proven wrong on Iraq.
BS. He might be going over there to solicit more support for the rebuilding phase. But as far as the war - W has been proved RIGHT, as of Jan. 30. Germany, France and especially Russia have been proved WRONG - and the reason for their stand, getting cut into the Oil-for-Palaces scandal, has been exposed.
Nothing like reporting the truth.
It is sickening.
