Are you tired of being constantly spammed?
2/21/05 | Mikey

Posted on 02/21/2005 8:47:14 AM PST by Mikey

I don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of all these unsolicited e-mails flooding into my e-mail box every day.

Even though I have a couple of programs that allow me to filter them out, I still have to enter the ones not recognized by those programs and they can number into the 1,000's per week.

I've decided (if its ok with Free Republic) to set up a page containing all known spammers. This way maybe instead of constantly having to unclog ones e-mail box every day or week, fellow Freeper's can copy these e-mail addresses and put them into their anti-spam programs.

Here's a partial list of some spammers;

For reasons unknown to me, I am not plagued by this. I may get 10 or so unsolicited emails a week, which yahoo sends to my bulk folder where they are promptly deleted. If I knew the "secret to my success" I would certainly share it.

No real problem with spam. On the rare occasions that I get some, I just block the site.

Jim doesn't have enough bandwidth to contain a list of all spammers...plus they spoof addresses sometimes. This really isn't a feasible idea.

There's plenty of good anti-spam programs out there. Even AOL does a pretty decent job of it.

Check out spampal.org.

Used in conjunction with Outlook filters, I only receive about one spam a day in my inbox... with the rest going immediately to my Deleted Items folder.

Spampal is free, and fairly accurate. If I weren't being overly careful, I could automatically delete spam and never even know that I'd received the junk... But the filter sometimes identifies good mail as "spam", so I take a couple of extra seconds to verify before hitting the "clear Deleted Items" button.

I'll bet you're like me and won't go to Drudge - a nest of spyware, which probably has the end result of making you a spam recipient.

My personal estimate is well under 10 spam mails per week here.

I use Cloudmark (formerly Spamnet)it has over a million users and is dynamically updated based on user input. For me it's worth the cost

1... Use Safari - it has a built-in trainable junk filter.
2... Find an ISP that uses "graylisting" - it's a trick that takes advantage of the fact that most spammers don't follow the rules.

The first time somebody sends you a message - it's graylisted. The ISP sends back a command that is supposed to trigger a re-send in a few minutes. Most spammers don't follow that rule (especially on hijacked machines). If they don't get that re-send withing X minutes, the message is considered spam. If they do, it's forwarded to you. If you reply to the message, they're whitelisted. Or you can blacklist all those senders yourself.

It cut my spam by 99%.

No problem AT ALL with Spam. I have INCREDIMAIL for
all my e-mail and it automatically separates spam
from personal mail. I can also add anyone of my choice
to the "Junk and UNAPPROVED" section of the program.
When the section gets too ful, INCREDIMAIL asks me
to delete what I don't want to keep, and it starts all
over.

With today's technology, a more comprehensive approach is really necessary to combat spam. Simply blocking email addresses or domains is not as effective as it used to be. Spammers can and do spoof the 'From' field and therefore blocking addresses is ineffectual. An effective spam filter needs to include heuristics algorithms, RBL lists and content filtering, among others.

Don't trade your email address for "free" stuff. Don't put it on registration forms or rebate offers. Always find the box on online forms where you decline offers for more "information" or "special offers", particularly if the "special offer" is from a "partner" (Translation - they are selling your email address to spammers). Stay away from porn sites. Never give your email address to a state or local government. It may be subject to discovery by anyone under open records laws. If your ISP or free email provider offers spam filtering, turn it on.

Do any of those practices sound familiar?

Nice effort, but write it off as a waste of time. I get 40 to 60 a day and 'blacklist' every one of them for 6 months. At most I see 3 or 4 duplicates a day.

I use a pre-screening program called "Mailwasher" (Google it) that gives me the ability to sort and filter more than 100 pieces of mail in under a minute. You can see attachments too, and THAT stops most of the virus mail too.

Spam is just part of the net, like billboards and TV commercials, if you don't learn to just deal with and ignore them they will drive you crazy.

Never use your master email acct as your email address. Always set up a sub acct and use that. When spam starts just discontinue that email address and start a new one. Once you master acct becomes corrupted you have to ask your isp to start a whole brand new acct and that is a pain.

Stay away from porn sites.

Actually, all of the things you listed sound familiar, and I follow those instructions faithfully. Above is the easiest one of all.

I average 120 Spams a day, and what a pain! I have to weed through before I delete to find the real mail sent to me.

That partial list you have is the tip of the iceberg.

Bookmarking this page for later.

There's plenty of good anti-spam programs out there. Even AOL does a pretty decent job of it.

Some email hosts set up some rather annoying protection schemes for their clients.  Before forwarding email the server sends an automatic questionnaire back to the sender, which pretty much amounts to a registration/application.

Occasionally, a user at one of these services will send a legitimate request for information.  When I reply, I get the automatic reply.  I simply delete the request.  The poor user never knows why he or she did not receive the information they requested.  Mostly, I suppose, they think I simply ignored them.

I'm getting more and more misspelled solicitations for various drugs and horny wives searching for company. I never visit sites offering either of these services...
