Actually they have. The centerpiece is the nuclear reactor at Bushewr (sp). If you're familiar with the fuel cycle, you'll understand that the centrifuges, and the fuel fabrication facilities are worthless without a reactor in which to load the fuel. During the operation of the reactor is when all those nasty isotopes form inside the fuel. The spent fuel can be reprocessed to remove the plutonium to construct nuclear weapons. That's why Iran is refusing to agree to turn over spent fuel in the negotiations. It makes no sense to keep spent fuel unless you either have plans on building nuclear weapons or like this country you have no centralized storage place so each utility has to store the stuff on site.

Iran's reactor can easily be destroyed in an air attack. Check out the aerial views on the web. We didn't sell Israel bunker busters to drop on Palestinian hovels. Once the reactor site goes poof, Iran is probably looking at another ten years to get back to the point to where they have a reactor in which they can load fuel.

Iran's recent panicked threats to retaliate underscore how vulnerable that facility is. If they were confident they were attack proof, they'd ignore us. Compare that to Saddam threatening us before the recent Iraq excursion. Iran's air defences have already been scoped out. I wouldn't be suprised if the Israelis already have all the info they need.

No insurance company in the world would sell the Iranians a policy for Bushewr. They'll never load fuel in that reactor.

Ooops--the French embassy: a smoking crater!
(Cowboy up, Jackie baby! Jes' funnin' with ya.)
No, we're not.

Seriously, loose the Israelis `cause: 1.) we owe them from `91; and, 2.) they really have an `axe to grind' with maniacal zealots who have vowed their destruction.

Which the Israelis have.

I'm guessing the Israeli's have something on the order of a .1 Kt to 10 Kt range type deliverable. A hundred feet or so below ground detonation is certainly going to get someone's attention.

Of course, if absolutely necessary, you can melt it down with a thermonuclear device. Several hundred Kts, should do the job

yes, but we know that Israel is not going to preemptively nuke Iran.

I wouldn't be absolutely certain about that with say a low-yield nuclear bunker buster. Certainly, they have no immediately plans to flatten Tehran. But the Israelis are not playing games when it comes to nuclear capability. Just ask Saddam, and his friend Chirac.

:Flying over Iraq would also mean flying over Jordan and awfully close to Syria and Lebanon and Jordan, some of whom have people in their defense establishment that would want to warn Iran"

Not if they take off from Iraq ;)

Israelis in Iraq...that'll be the day...

Also, Iran is using mined uranium, not plutonium for their nuclear cycle, which does not require a reactor to enrich (unless they were going to convert it to plutonium, which while unnecessary for the bomb, is easier than using uranium). Destroying any reactor would not slow them down much but I'm sure it would piss them off. Enrichment and Processing facilities would be high on the list. The Iranians are purpotedly using centrifuges and designs to build more centrifuges (it takes tens of thousands) received from the famous A.Q. Kahn of Pakistan.

I guess they won't miss the reactor then. It'll still take them another ten years to rebuild. I wonder what they're going to do with the rest of the fuel cycle since they've said they're not going to build bombs.

Another thing that a lot of folks are missing is that you need lots of power for that stuff. Along with that big fat reactor as a target they also have their power grid exposed. Big power plants need lots of water. Anybody with half a brain can find targets.

Israel has already admitted that it cannot acheive the same goal as they did in Iraq in 81. Iran has too many sites hidden and their air defenses are a formidable opponent. Any Israeli strike would just dent Iran's capability.

Plus, I wonder about the "bunker busting" factor, can they do it? Can the US?

This comment was for European consumption. VP Cheney made a similar comment not too long ago, followed by POTUS the other day. Europe needs to intervene now if they want to stop it by forcing Iran to capitulate.

I think Euro wants Israel to do this. I think they would like to see Israel get into a war.

I'm hoping the Iranians will take a cue from the Iraqis and fill the vacuum with democratic Iranians. Amazingly, if you look at the map Iran is pretty much surrounded by DEMOCRATIC Islamic states. Iraq, Turkey, Afghanistan

WhAT EXCELENT PLANING BY THE US! The Iranians and SYriANS are considered worthless . They just don't know it yeT More misundersestimating the OUTSTANDINg President. He will lead, and the rest of you get the hell out of the way? Unless you might have a coherant idea of something better to offer? Hahaha the dems have nothing To offer!
