The whole concept of Political Capital as a expendible resources is a bad analogy, and does not reflect reality in politics. We lost an opportunity to get the nuclear option.
Bush himself has said in effect that Political Capital is created when it is expended.
OK, this wasn't "expended." It was squandered.

(If it's called "collateral damage," how come I can't use it to secure a loan?)

I disagree. This is a fight we need fought, and won. Not so much for Terri, but for the balance of power..specifically the constraint of the Judiciary.
It doesn't matter who appoints them, if they know they have the rest of their lives to wield unlimited power with little or no consequences. They would all turn to tyrants it's human nature, and if it wasn't Communism would work.
We need them to fight it out now, or we will be left with only the Second Amendment option, and that is no good for anyone.
This will only be Squandered if certain justices remain on the bench. Which is likely. I'm still ready to pull the impeachment trigger on Kennedy et al over the whole International Law is Relevant crap. These guys need a correction.
