Please don't joke about funerals in New Orleans. I have many very dear friends there and I'm very worried about them.

You guys shock me! I would be freaking out SOOOOOOOO much!!!!!

yeah, many are. All over the our neighborhood most are boarded up. Lots and lots have packed up and headed out of town. But like after Opal if the roads are closed you can't get back home. Maybe a week or more.

How close are you to Nancy Creek? That thing must be roaring. I remember swimming down in in the sixties at about 20 mph after one of these.

Sure. As long as you go 14 mph. The problem is when you hit the coastline, the storm keeps going. ;-)

yeah...

generally tornadoes in the squall bands are typically short lived, so if it didnt hit anything immediately after touchdown, it probably did little damage...

I wonder what the beach looks like down there in St. Pete Beach right now...???

The wife and I stayed at the Sirata (sp?) last November...

I love to take out of town guests to the old Rod 'N Reel fishing pier on Anna Maria Island. It's the smaller pier with dirt cheap, incredibly good seafood and beer. Most tourists don't know it's there.

Hi Sarasota,

I'm in Orlando. As you see from this Orlando radar, we are getting a lot of rain. We had a tornado watch in the afternoon. It is messing up our weekend--I feel bad for the tourists.

I got in one set of tennis this morning, then it rained us out. These feeder bands are what is affecting us so even though we are out of the direct path, you can see how wide of an area is affected all through Florida.

This photo is real time so it will change often and the rain area may disappear for those looking at this photo later. (Original image 831pm Sat night)

"Have we ever seen a Hurricane that has RE-intensified THIS quickly after a significant landfall? "

Not to my knowledge. Dennis looked like he was within an hour of being done last night leaving Cuba... as soon as the circulation hit water it re-fired. The low level circ was always small/tight... and it managed to make it across fine. Lots were saying this was coming in as cat 2, but this process that is occurring now was evident about 2 hours before it began, though I would have never guessed it'd be back to 942mb already.

The ALL CAPS remind me of the old teletypes that print entirely in caps. It's possible some of those old dinosaurs still exist so perhaps the NWS still does this so their bulletins will be printable on teletype machines.

Camille is the only CAT 5 to hit the gulf Coast.

They didn't have the scale back then but what about Audry? I remember it was fairly recently that they graded Camille a 5. Wonder what they think Audry might have been?

But what do you do to make yourself safe? Just board up the windows? Where do you go in the house?

To: NautiNurse; All

I've been monitoring this thread (and the others before it) for the past few days, but don't post because I am high and dry in a drought area with nothing of signifigance to post. Until Now.

I have a close friend who's husband works for a Utility Company near where I live. He and his 19 y.o. son are leaving in a Cherry Picker in about an hour. They are headed your way. There are about 20 teams, each with a truck going from this area.

It is my understanding they will drive to St. Louis tonite and sleep. Then wait for further instructions.

Help is on the way.

Back to lurking mode.

I'll have to remember that. Hopefully we'll get back there soon. Do you have any suggestions for places to stay?

I know Castro likes to keep a lid on things but thought he might let some nuggets slip out to the CNN bureau.

Hur. Dennis was over Cuba longer than anticipated. The devastation must have been enormous as a strong Cat. 4.

it certainly is yes, but comparatively, it is still smaller than all but Charley...

right now it is comparative to maybe Alex of last year....

It will be the same sizewise of Ivan when it hits...

the diurnal maximum is tonight and it will continue to strengthen...

prayers to all those on the gulf coast. They will need them. Hopefully there will be a cool eddy of water before it hits so it will top off at least....
