Why is it that the NE quad of a hurricane has the highest winds?

First, the "right side of the storm" is defined with respect to the storm's motion: if the hurricane is moving to the west, the right side would be to the north of the storm; if the hurricane is moving to the north, the right side would be to the east of the storm, etc. In general, the strongest winds in a hurricane are found on the right side of the storm because the motion of the hurricane also contributes to its swirling winds. A hurricane with a 90 mph [145 km/hr] winds while stationary would have winds up to 100 mph [160 km/hr] on the right side and only 80 mph [130 km/hr] on the left side if it began moving (any direction) at 10 mph [16 km/hr].

HeHe ..I'm sorry ;^( -- Can you believe there's a piece of Dennis nearly touching South America? This is so scary .. flashback sympathy pains here. Looks like you're still getting drenched there. Just called my uncle to let him know that his winter home (he suffered much damage in Frances and Jeanne) between Ft. Pierce and WPB is in tornado box... big bad band between Laud. and Melbourne on the east coast now.

That is an absolutely gorgeous picture.

I'm going to have to go over to some weather sites and find some other pictures of this baby.

Wish I could help from KY, but I sure can pray. Hoping y'all weather the storm well.

But, with New Orleans what it is, think how fun the mass funerals will be. Jazz bands marching through the streets for weeks on end...

Hey commish--

I'm in Montgomery too. Things don't look so good for us, do they. I live in Old Cloversale/Huntington Area. So I expect a lot of tree damage and no power -- especiall since the ground is already saturated!

Dry? We're getting (or got) soaked here (Montgomery, AL area) and this thing is still hundreds of miles away!

The right side of the storm is the most damaging because the winds are travelling in the same direction as the storm. The wind has the additional component of the the storms forward motion added to the air movement.

No. Have they had a rain delay?

If they did it wasn't much. They were scheduled to begin at 7pm. I guess not. How in the hell has the stadium stayed dry?

I'm not sure I buy that. I've never seen the NW quad as having the strongest winds when the storm is traveling west.

Well I can tell you it is moving West. The right side of the storm is in Atlanta. I know all of you watching the Braves and The Brewers think I'm crazy. The baseball gods are obviously shining on Turner Field. Weirdest thing I have ever seen.

Here's an extreme weather chasing thought -- would it be possible, using GPS in a seagoing vessel (assume for the sake of argument that the boat can handle the swells), to stay within the eye of a hurricane right up to landfall?

That's bizarre since the Pcola area is dry and calm right now.

Oooh what part of KY are you at? My parents are in Spencer Co, just about 30 min southeast of Louisville. Been bitching hardcore about the lack of rain, I think the remnants of this storm are gonna make up for that....

BTW, the weather guys need to lose the ALL CAPS. Or do they just use them during hurricanes so they can be heard?

It is probably a holdover from older equipment with 128 bit words. It takes 256 bits for the full ASCII character set with upper and lower case. Once upon a time it was all caps all the time. Punch cards and all that. (Damn, do I feel old)
